The Association of Texas Colleges and Universities has elected Dr. Robert Aguero to serve on the organization’s board of directors. Dr. Aguero will serve a three-year term as representative of the community college sector.

Dr. Donetta Goodall, associate vice president of academic affairs, has been appointed by Mayor Will Wynn to the Mayor's Task Force on Mental Health. In addition to serving on the Task Force at large, she serves on the Education and Community Awareness Subcommittee. The Mental Health Task Force is charged with examining the mental health of the Austin/Travis County community with particular emphasis on the four critical areas of education and community awareness, criminal justice, housing, and short-and long-term treatment.

Cecile Sanders , executive director of grant development, Lynn Schmitz, grant writer, and Sharon Duncan, director of the Alternate Teacher’s Certification Program, coordinated efforts that resulted in ACC’s receiving a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The No Child Left Behind grant will fund Transition to Teaching, a program to recruit talented midcareer professionals and recent college graduates to teach in high-need schools through alternative certification routes. 

Barry Silverberg , director of the Center for Community-Based and Nonprofit Organizations, was named a finalist for the individual category of the Ethics in Business Award, a partnership of the Samaritan Center and St. Edward’s University.

Student Assistance Director Terry Bazan has been elected to the Texas Student Financial Aid Administrators board. Bazan was also recognized at a recent statewide conference for her work in lowering students’ loan default rate and improving financial aid for students.

Students

Denise Martin has launched Texas Cheerleader Magazine, the first magazine of its kind in Texas. Martin’s magazine will keep cheerleaders up to date with the latest cheerleading styles and trends, competitions, summer camps, health and safety tips, and training opportunities.

Hal Ferguson , who participated in an ACC Tech Prep program through Georgetown High School’s agriculture science department, has articulated into ACC’s welding program at the intermediate level. By moving through the welding curriculum at a faster pace, Hal will have time to take additional welding courses in an area in which he is most interested and enhance his welding skills to make him an even more attractive candidate for a position in industry. Hoff’s Georgetown agriculture science teachers were Paul Boff, Darrell Dunn, and Billy Hord.

Saveur culinary magazine features former student Liz Pearson and her recipe for a Texas brunch casserole. Pearson, who works for Saveur, calls the casserole “Sue Raye’s Breakfast Casserole,” named for her mother, who is an ACC employee.

Community

The University of Texas at Austin College of Fine Arts has extended its thanks to Dr. Mariano Díaz-Miranda for his role in coordinating the recent “Zoot Suit” symposium held at the Riverside Campus. More than 100 people attended the four panel discussions. Dr. Robert Aguero also participated in the event.
