Dr. Naomi Carroll, coordinator of the Health Professions Institute, and Norma Mercado, chair of the Medical Coding Department, recently completed the editing and content review of the textbook “Basic Coding for Physicians’ Practice,” written by Cynthia Newby and published by McGraw-Hill. Carroll and Mercado were invited to participate based on the rapidly growing reputation of ACC’s Medical Coding program.

Nina Almasy, assistant professor of vocational nursing, has co-written the article “Refugees’ Perceptions of Healthy Behaviors,” scheduled for publication July 2005 in the Journal of Immigrant Health.

Paige Fletcher, associate professor of vocational nursing, will serve as a site visitor for the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission.

Dr. Mary Hensley, associate vice president of instructional support services, has joined the executive board of Austin Partners in Education, a program founded by the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce and the Austin Independent School District. Hensley also serves as 2004-2005 vice-chair of the Administrative Team for the Community Action Network, a broad-based partnership of community organizations.

Barry Silverberg, director of ACC’s Center for Community-Based and Nonprofit Organizations, chairs the local planning committee for the 2005 American Creativity Association International Conference, scheduled for March 30 through April 2 in the Omni Hotel Downtown. ACC is co-sponsoring the conference.

Carol Duss, international student admissions coordinator, assisted the State Department Aug. 25-29 during a local visit from Russian university representatives learning about community college opportunities. Also participating were Ron Brey, associate vice president of instructional resources and technology, and Jan Smith, director of the International Business Institute.

ACC biology adjunct instructor Rodney Rohde has published the article “National Laboratory Training Network (NLTN) Public Health Series Course: Molecular Diagnostic Techniques for the Public Health Laboratory” in the August issue of Laboratory Medicine journal. Rohde also participated in an NLTN workshop on molecular diagnostics Aug. 16-20 in Richmond, Calif. An assistant professor at Texas State University-San Marcos, Rohde was named runner-up for a Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities from Texas State.

 Dr. Gerry Tucker, associate vice president of human resources, has been asked to serve on the Board of Communities in Schools dropout prevention program.

Dr. Kathryn Frost, adjunct instructor in psychology, has accepted a Fulbright Scholar grant to teach at the University of Bucharest in Romania during the 2004-2005 academic year.

The Texas Professional Photographers Association (TPPA) has named H. Lynn Jones, former chair of the Photographic Technology Department, an honorary life member. This marks the fifth time the award has been given in the group’s 106-year history. Jones was honored for his service to the profession as a photographer, writer, inventor, business executive, and educator. The organization particularly cited Jones for establishing a connection between ACC and the TPPA, which has helped ACC’s photography students develop their skills while maintaining professional standards for the state’s photographers.

Dr. Mariano Díaz-Miranda, professor of history and director of ACC’s Latino/Latin American Studies Center “ El Centro” is overseeing the Zoot Suit Symposium scheduled for Sept. 18 at the Riverside Campus, in conjunction with the University of Texas at Austin College of Fine Arts Performing Arts Center. Díaz-Miranda also co-chairs, with the director of the Center of Mexican American Studies at UT, a curriculum committee developing an associate’s degree in Mexican-American studies for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
