Student Assistance Director Terry Bazan served as expert panelist for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board's financial aid training March 1 for THECB Participation and Success Committee.

The Culinary Arts program has been accredited by the American Culinary Federation, the national governing body of chefs and chef instruction.

Kathryn Schwartz, adjunct associate professor of financial management, has authored the articles "By the Book: Preparing Austin for an Emergency" and "Steeling the Competition," published in the Winter 2006 edition of St. Edward's University Magazine.

Soon Merz, vice president of effectiveness and accountability, addressed the March 7 Friends of Round Rock Higher Education Center meeting. She provided an overview of Central Texas statistics that reinforce the importance of Austin Community College in achieving the goals of Closing the Gaps.

STUDENTS

Ten students will participate in a two-week study abroad trip to Scotland and Germany in May. The Management Department is conducting the trip, which combines business, economics, and culture.

Austin Community College has nominated honor student Homa Caldwell-Tomás for the All-USA Academic Team sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa, the American Association of Community Colleges, and USA Today. The All-USA Academic Team program annually
recognizes 60 outstanding two-year college students based on academic performance, college activities, and community service. Caldwell-Tomás' nomination also makes her eligible for the Texas Academic Team.

Austin Mayor Will Wynn recently honored Deborah Hill, Radio-Television-Film Department chair, with a certificate of appreciation for her 10 years of service on the Austin Telecommunications Commission.

The Walter Cooper Memorial College and Career Center at Garza High School was named and dedicated on March 27. ACC students, staff, and faculty attended. Walter Cooper was an ACC counselor who saw the potential in students and helped them see it in themselves. Cooper had a longstanding relationship with Garza, resulting in a significant enrollment of ACC students from Garza each year.
