The ACC Office for Students with Disabilities hosted the annual statewide Association on Higher Education and Disability conference Oct. 26-28. More than 100 people attended, representing disability service providers in post-secondary institutions and vocational rehabilitation agencies from across Texas. Those responsible for the planning and success were: Steve Christopher, Lori Bowman, Stephanie Cochren, Eloisa Sleeth, Dottie Haley, Cathy Tremaria, Oscar Newman, Judy Hay-Mullen, John Aintablian, Leslie Saldana, and Carolyn Allred.

CBS News reporter Bill Geist interviewed Library Services Professor Red Wassenich as part of a news feature inspired by the recent Austin theater production "Keepin' It Weird." As originator of the "Keep Austin Weird" slogan, Wassenich was featured alongside other Austin notables in the "CBS Sunday Morning" news show.

An election judge extended a special thanks to Campus Police Officer Chris Law for his assistance during the Nov. 8 election. Law is stationed at the Pinnacle Campus, and his help allowed voting there to proceed in an orderly and peaceful manner, despite a high voter turnout and emotions surrounding some ballot issues.

The University of Texas Center for Performance Excellence (UTCPE) has awarded Austin Community College a Level II Progress Award for performance excellence in information technology. The UTCPE is a recognition program based on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria.

Campus managers Marilyn Lee Taylor and Frank Taylor were honored at a ceremony Nov. 1 by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for the work they contribute in respecting, honoring and supporting those ACC employees who are serving in the military.

STUDENTS

Austin Community College accounting students ranked sixth in the state for the pass-rate on the CPA exam. Ranking is based on tests taken during the 12 months from October 2004 through September 2005, according to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy. ACC accounting students finished with a 51.16 percent pass rate on all sections on the exam. ACC was ranked behind the University of Texas at Austin, Texas A&M University, Baylor University, Trinity University, and Angelo State University. Rounding out the top 10 after ACC were Southern Methodist University, UT-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin State University, and the University of North Texas.

The local chapter of the American Cancer Society has named Arthur Vargas as its 2005 Volunteer of the Year. Through Phi Theta Kappa, Vargas organized the Colleges Against Cancer Chapter at ACC. And as the recently elected international president for Phi Theta Kappa, Vargas was instrumental in having ACC's Phi Theta Kappa involvement with the Cancer Society extended through 2006 through a program titled "Conquering Cancer: Continuing the Fight."
