The Texas Workforce Commission renewed its approval of Austin Community College to train military veterans and other eligible persons under the provisions of Title 38, United States Code. In the Feb. 22 notice, the commission also commended Veterans Affairs Manager Mark Harden for his well-organized recordkeeping and "excellent standard of service."

Nancy Fuentes, adjunct professor of developmental mathematics, has joined the Board of Directors for Ecology Action of Texas, a nonprofit organization that promotes recycling.

Engineering Professor Saad Eways, Ph.D., has received a $162,000 award to develop a schoolteacher training program to advance student achievement in science. The Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science Teaching recently approved funding the project for 2005-2006.

Dr. Mary Hensley, vice president of college support systems and ISD relations, presented College Connection information Jan. 31 during the Texas Association of School Administrators' Mid-Winter Conference at the Austin Convention Center. In addition, on Feb. 21 Dr. Hensley represented ACC at a Georgetown community forum hosted by Southwestern University and at a Bastrop ISD Board of Trustees meeting, where she discussed College Connection.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals of Greater Austin recognized Barry Silverberg as one of region's philanthropic leaders. Silverberg, director of ACC's Center for Community-Based and Nonprofit Organizations, was honored at the association's 16th annual Philanthropy Day awards luncheon held Jan. 24 at the Hilton Austin Hotel. In addition, St. Edward's University featured Silverberg in their Winter 2006 edition of New College News magazine for his role as chair of the university's New College Advisory Council.

Dr. Maggie de la Teja, Riverside campus dean of student services, has been elected chair of the Community and Two-Year College Advisory Board for the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators.

Carolyn Cantu, associate professor in the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, authored the article "Servant-leadership in Pediatrics," published in the Feb. 6 issue of Advance for Occupational Therapy Practitioners magazine.

Susan Busa, adjunct associate professor of radio, television, and film, earned a silver medal at the Park City Film Music Festival for her short film "Harmony in the Hills." The independent film festival was held Jan. 19-29 in Park City, Utah.

The Starlink Internet-based education network and the University of Southern Maine have both featured the ACC short film "Homework Circa 2005" in professional development presentations. The film was produced under the direction of ACC's Professional Development Office and featured during the fall General Assembly. "Millennial Generation" stars Media/Graphics Specialist Merrilee Shopland and her teenage son, Tyler. Human Resources Training Specialist Jennifer Gray headed the project. Instructional Development video producers Nancy Holden and Claudia Sperber and videographer Melissa Griffith produced the film.

STUDENTS

Arthur Vargas, former president of Phi Theta Kappa's ACC chapter, was installed as a student representative on the international Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors during the group's annual meeting held in January in Seattle, Wash. His term is for 2006-2007.

COMMUNITY

Dr. Barbara Mink, chair of the ACC Board of Trustees, was elected president of the Texas Association of Community College Trustees and Administrators for 2005-2006. Mink also serves on the Board of Directors Executive Committee for Envision Central Texas and co-chairs the group's Economic Development Coordination Committee.
