Public Information and College Marketing received five Medallion Awards in November from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations. They included a gold award for “Teach!” in the Logo Design category; a silver award for the new “www.austincc.edu” website; a silver award in the Media Success category for “Electric Industry Workforce Need”; a silver award for the “Teach!” folder; and a bronze award for the “Inca Trail” poster design.

Developer.com recognized Computer Information Technology Professor Richard Baldwin’s 2004 java tutorial, “Using JDBC with MySQL, Getting Started,” as one of the website’s most-viewed articles for September.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children selected Child Development Department Chair Gale Spear and Professor Linda Welsh to serve as peer reviewers for the early childhood associate degree accreditation program.

Electronics and Advanced Technologies faculty Hector Aguilar, Alberto Quinonez, and Arunachala Nagarajann, and “Nanotechnology for Dummies” author Richard Booker, presented the nanotechnology overview “Nanotech 101” Oct. 2-4 at the NanoTX’06 conference in Dallas. At the same conference, Aguilar, chair of ACC’s Electronics and Advanced Technologies Department, Mike Midgley, vice president of workforce education and business development, and Randy Goodall of SEMATECH presented “Everything’s Smaller in Texas,” an overview of the joint ACC-SEMATECH Nanotechnology Workforce Development & Education project.

Amber Kelly, Cypress Creek Campus dean of student services, Mike Midgley, vice president of workforce education and business development, and Tamara Atkinson of WorkSource presented “The ‘Best Place to Find a Job’ in Austin Goes to College: Linking Public Labor Exchange to the Community College” at the National Council for Workforce Education’s annual conference in Albuquerque, N.M., Oct. 21-24.

The Round Rock Higher Education Center recently recognized ACC administrative assistant Alice Farmer as one of the campus’ “Shining Star” staff members for her excellent performance and customer service.

Speech and Drama Professor Cassandra Knobloch, Ph.D., wrote the show “Kate Chopin: Her Life and Literature,” a one-hour performance about the controversial author of “The Awakening” and other 19th-century works. Knobloch performed “Chopin” Nov. 10 and 12 at the Northridge Campus.

Dalton Publishing has published two new poetry collections by ACC faculty. Arts and Humanities Dean Lyman Grant’s book The Road Home ($12.95, Dalton Publishing, 80 pages), was released in November. English Adjunct Associate Professor Joe Hoppe’s book Galvanized ($12.95, Dalton Publishing, 88 pages), was released in October. Arts Adjunct Professor Shawn Camp illustrated The Road Home.

Arts and Humanities Dean Lyman Grant published the article “Open Borders: Literary Journals in Texas Today,” in the Langdon Review of Arts in Texas (2006-2007, Volume 3).

International Programs hosted the presentation “Reel Mexico” Nov. 16 at the Eastview Campus. The event, highlighting ACC’s Mesoamerica Study Abroad program, featured presentations from ACC President/CEO Dr. Stephen B. Kinslow, students Gordon Ulmer and Evan Zsu, Anthropology and Geography Professor Clint Davis, and Anthropology Adjunct Professor David Brown, Ph.D.

Gerry Tucker, associate vice president of human resources, attended the Nov. 15 CEO Summit in Austin sponsored by the Texas Coalition for Worksite Wellness.

STUDENTS

Pinnacle is currently displaying students’ art projects. Projects from a current Design I class, taught by Jerry DeFreese, are showing in the commons room on the first floor. Projects from a spring Watercolor course, taught by Janet Brooks, are on view in the library on the ninth floor.

COMMUNITY

Developmental Writing Associate Professor Frank Cronin is providing weekly tutoring sessions for students at Westview Middle School. Sessions began Nov. 6 and run through Dec. 18.
