More than 250 people attended the ACC Youth Programs Session I graduation dinner and ceremonies held June 15. Program graduates included 20 students in fourth and fifth grade and 50 students in sixth through eighth grade.
Mentor and Youth Program Coordinator Javier Olguin organized the effort. He was supported by Stacy Guerra, administrative assistant; Noel Rodriguez, Eastview Campus assistant coordinator, and Mary Lou Swart, specialist II.
The following students, staff, and volunteers served as group leaders: Freedia Miles, Lorena Salazar, Myra Arizola, Jeannette Assiongbon, Maribel Perez, Yesenia Alvarez, Angela Ruiz, Patricia Sanchez, Alejandra Zarate, Ian Alba, Veronica Zarate, Marisol Alfaro, Sonia Rivera, Gabe Smith, Joseph Trevino, and Tiffany Romer.
The ACC District also extends special thanks to corporate and community sponsors that made the youth programs possible: Dell, Applied Materials, AMD, Wells Fargo, Tokyo Electron, Spansion, Praxair, SEMATECH, the Dell Foundation, and Texas Regional Collaborative for Excellence in Science Education.
The Austin Community College District was featured in June 19 testimony before U.S. Subcommittee on Energy and Environment in Washington, D.C. Interstate Renewable Energy Council Executive Director Jane Weissman, addressing the need for quality solar energy job training programs, highlighted the ACC District-State of Texas initiative in 2006 to increase the number of solar energy workers in Central Texas. The training sold out two weeks ahead of the official start date and prompted Continuing Education to offer a second section for the 2006 winter semester.
