The nonprofit National Center for Academic Transformation has selected Austin Community College to redesign the course U.S. Government (GOVT 2305) as part of its Colleagues Committed to Redesign Program. A faculty team will undertake a tested and structured approach to assessing costs for delivering instruction, redesigning the course taking advantage of the capabilities of information technology, and measuring student learning.

The Drama Department was honored by the Austin American-Statesman and Austin Chronicle newspapers for last year’s production of “Funnyhouse of a Negro.” The Statesman named the play on its “best of” list, while it earned honorable mention at the Chronicle. The play was also previously nominated for five Austin Critics Table Awards, with Marcus McQuirter winning best director and Feliz Dia McDonald taking home the award for best performance by a student.

Phi Theta Kappa International Society will present President/CEO Stephen B. Kinslow, Ph.D., its Shirley B. Gordon Award of Distinction at the society’s annual international convention April 3-5 in Philadelphia. The award honors college presidents and campus chief executive officers for their outstanding support of Phi Theta Kappa.

STUDENTS

Meeting and event planning major LeKisha McKinley is one of four students nationwide to be awarded the prestigious Helen Brett Scholarship. The Exhibition Industry Foundation awards the $5,000 scholarships each year to individuals studying exhibition management. Applicants must have at least a 3.0 grade point average to be considered.

COMMUNITY

Austin Independent School District has selected Gerry Tucker, associate vice president of human resources, for its 2008 Community Service Award. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated strong character, excellent leadership, and service to Austin ISD students and families. It will be presented February 10 during the district’s African American Heritage Celebration.
