More than a dozen ACC faculty members were honored with Teaching Excellence Awards from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) during its annual convention May 25-28 in Austin. They were:

The National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development presented ACC President Stephen B. Kinslow, Ph.D., with its 2008 International Leadership Award, calling him a “tireless proponent of accessible, affordable higher education and training.”

Amardeep Kahlon, assistant department chair of computer information systems/computer science, is participating in a research group exploring the lack of women in computing. As part of her efforts, she will help develop college materials to attract more women into computer science and co-present at the Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education Conference June 30-July 2 in Madrid.

The Building and Construction Technology Department is producing a series of student safety videos for the program. The first video, “How to Avoid a Table Saw Kickback,” features a demonstration by Associate Professor Bradley Boelter. It is posted at youtube.com

The Texas Library Association presented Library Services with a Branding Iron Award for its “Know How” campaign. Awards were presented at the association’s annual convention April 15-18 in Dallas. Winners will be featured in the summer issue of Texas Library Journal.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education District IV presented Public Information and College Marketing with an award for the “ACC in Jeans” catalog, course schedule, student handbook, and ACC News fall 2007 institutional identity program. Other winners in the category included the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Louisiana State University.

History Professor Mariano Diaz-Miranda, Ph.D., held a mock college class April 11 for students of PRIDE Academic High School in San Marcos. He presented the syllabus and an introductory lesson from the course Mexican-American History I (HIST 2327).

STUDENTS

Dance students Bonnie Cox, Leigh Gaymon-Jones, and Christina Houle joined Adjunct Dance Professor Darla Johnson in Atlanta for a collaboration with Spelman College Dance/Theater that culuminated in public performaces April 17-20. As part of the exchange, Spelman students will visit Austin in September and share the stage with ACC during the ProArts Black Arts Festival. The collaboration is titled “The Justice Project,” and each student from both schools directly contributed to the dance/theater piece.

COMMUNITY

Cypress Creek Campus faculty and staff participated in the third annual Cedar Park Adult Spelling Bee on April 5, to benefit the Cedar Park Public Library Foundation. The campus hosted the event and fielded a spelling team composed of Campus Manager’s Assistant Adele Harmon, Government Adjunct Professor Marcee Champion and her mother-in-law, LaNell Champion, and Psychology Adjunct Professor Robert Conkright. Pam Spooner, Cypress Creek head librarian, served on the judges panel.
