FACULTY & STAFF

The Office of Student Success, together with the English for Speakers of Other Languages Department, piloted an arena-style, all-day assessment, advising, and registration session August 16 at the Rio Grande Campus for residents wanting to study English as a Second Language at ACC. The event was so well received that the planning committee would like to repeat this opportunity for students. Special thanks go to the following participants:

Biology Department Chair Alice Sessions, Ph.D., and Math and Sciences Dean David Fonken, Ph.D., were instrumental in helping St. Edward’s University secure a five-year, $737,565 grant from the National Science Foundation. As part of the grant, ACC will partner with St. Edward’s to prepare future math and science teachers.

The Texas Army National Guard has promoted Dr. Sharon King Frederick to the rank of major. Frederick, a National Guard medical plans officer, is student learning services director at ACC. She has served over 24 years in the National Guard, with stints in Kosovo and Afghanistan.

The College and University Professional Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR) will showcase the ACC Human Resources website on its online Knowledge Center in order to promote successful online approaches to HR.

STUDENTS

The Accent student newspaper won first place in the Two-year College Newspaper Best of Show category at the National College Summer Journalism Workshop sponsored by the Associated College Press in Washington, D.C., July 31-August 3. Accent Editor Elizabeth Carson accepted the award.

COMMUNITY

Austin Community College will host a panel discussion in October for the Kozmetsky Center of Excellence in Global Finance at St. Edward’s University. It will be part of the symposium “Update: America and the World,” which will feature top academics and policy makers discussing global political and economic trends. Coordinating ACC’s participation are Gaye Lynne Scott, dean of social and behavioral science, and Charles Quinn, dean of business studies.
