Data on Arithmetic Labs (Fall 2006)

In Fall 05, there were 2246 students who received a grade in 0330 - all classes!!.

Of these, 1919 were in classes from which I received some or all the data I requested - though, this differed with the class and the particular student.

Depending upon the particular data of interest - ArithAsses, Pretest, etc., the number of students for whom I have data is less than the full 1919: 788 for those who took departmental pretest and 1571 for the Arith Assess.

In the Summary charts, you will see how grades on each of these corresponded with grades.

in addition, at the bottom, you will see grade distributions for those students. I also have grade distributions shown for the 1919 students who were enrolled in those sections and finally for all 2246 students.

Note that success rate is considerably lower for the larger groups. Probably many of those who do not show up the first or second day and fail to take the pretest tend to be more likely to have attendance and other problems? Likewise those who do not take the ArithAssess - many of them may already have been lost? and failure to take that test seems even more indicative of a problem, I think. Probably makes sense that the distribution for all students in the data-producing classes is similar to that for all students in all classes. The fact that the latter is slightly worse may be happenchance or perhaps reflect slighty lower success in distance learning, computer-mediated, etc., but I have not broken those sections out into any groupings.

I have similar data from SP06 including a third test, the 40-question Summary (designed by Vince and I) given by some classes instead of the pretest. It is less clear, though my intent is still to enter scores question by question to see which if any of the questions has high predictive value. In the Spring, I there were 1629 students in total and 1281 student in data-producing sections.

Here is some preliminary data I have collected:
