MLAB 2431 Immunohematology

Unit 5 Objectives: Genetics

  1. Define and relate the following terms as they apply to genetics and immunohematology:
    • gene
    • trans
    • cis
    • chromosomes
    • linked
    • autosomes
    • crossing over
    • sex chromosomes
    • phenotype
    • locus
    • genotype
    • alleles
    • homozygous
    • syntenic
    • heterozygous
    • antithetical
    • polymorphic

  2. Define the following terms used to describe dominant and recessive traits:
    • trait
    • dominant
    • recessive
    • codominant
    • autosomal dominant
    • autosomal recessive
    • sex linked dominant
    • sex linked recessive

  3. Give the phenotype of a child, mother and alleged father evaluate the results and determine whether it is a direct or indirect exclusion of paternity.
  4. Given the ABO genotypes of parents use the Punnett square to calculate the possible genotypes and the percentages of the children.
  5. Describe the importance of population genetics.
  6. Given the phenotypic frequencies of antigens calculate the percentage of donors who would lack all antigens given.
