2378 Fundamentals of Molecular Diagnostics |
Unit 3 Notes - DNAI cannot emphasize enough the importance of Chapter 1 in your textbook. I would strongly encourage you to skim through the chapter quickly the first time then re-read and use underlining with a colored pen and highlighting of essential, key elements of the chapter. Do NOT be afraid to mark in the book, it is yours. Active reading will enhance your retention of the material. Make notes in a spiral notebook, word processor or index cards. Reading this chapter may take as long as 4 hours so block out an adequate amount of time in your schedule. As you read through the chapter carefully review the diagrams provided to increase your understanding of the concepts presented. The vocabulary you learn in this chapter will be essential in understanding the concepts and principles of molecular testing in later chapters. I have provided a glossary of terms on the "Objectives" page that I believe are essential to future learning. Intimate knowledge of DNA structure, function and replication are essential. This knowledge is the foundation for understanding, developing and performing molecular diagnostic testing. I hope the following two pictures will assist you during your studies. The picture on the left depicts how DNA is coiled to form chromosomes. The picture on the right illustrates DNA replication. I would encourage you to print this out so you can refer to it during your studies.
