Unit 5 Notes - Proteins

My expectation is that you have a BASIC understanding of protein synthesis. You do NOT need to memorize the 20 amino acids or the codons that code for each amino acid. I want you to know the 3 steps, transcription, translation and protein production, and a general description of the 4 protein structures (primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary). As you read your textbook focus on the basic, not in depth, concepts. Use your objectives as a guide.

  1. Read Chapter 3 in your textbook.
  2. The powerpoint presentation (pdf version) from Unit 4 is appropriate for this section as well.
  3. Visit the "Steps in Protein Synthesis" website. This has an excellent overview of the process of protein synthesis.
