Unit 7 Objectives - Resolution and Detection of Nucleic Acids

  1. Explain the principle and performance of electrophoresis as it applies to nucleic acids.
  2. Compare and contrast agarose and polyacrylamide gel polymers.
  3. State the principle of electrophoresis.
  4. Explain the performance, advantages and disadvantages of each of the following electrophoretic methods: traditional, pulsed field gel and capillary as it is applies to nucleic acid separation
  5. Describe the general types of reagents and equipment used for electrophoresis.
  6. Compare and contrast detection systems (Ethidium Bromide, SyBr green and silver stain) used in nucleic acid applications.
