Checklist for the First Section

Or Some Things to Figure Out
When Starting the Course

This list is meant for you to use after you have begun to use the software (or are using it in the Learning Lab).

In Part 3 of the Orientation, you'll be asked to answer questions about these. If you make notes as suggested here, you'll be able to do that easily.

  • Have you found the description of how to use the software?
  • Which part of the software will actually count in your grade?
  • Have you found the description and example of how to do the homework?
  • Do you see how much work you are typically expected to show? This is true for tests as well.
  • Have you found the homework assignments? Print them. Notice that they include some material not in the book (PAN).
  • For a given lesson, will you go through the explanations in the software before you do the paper homework? (Hint: If you try to do the paper homework without hearing/seeing any explanations, you are not getting the full benefit of the course, and you probably won't pass or you will certainly suffer a lot more.)
  • Have you found the chapter and section notes that tell you what to pay careful attention to in each section?
  • Have you done a lesson in the software? Be sure that you have taken an Evaluate Quiz and made at least an 80. Then do "Check progress" in the software and be sure your correct results show there.
  • What is the minimum time requirement for the course? Make a note of the requirement when you are caught up and the different requirement when you are behind.
  • Do you know the requirements for class participation each week? What are you required to do each week?
  • Have you found the Test Reviews?
  • Are you required to do all the problems on the Test Reviews? Are you required to do some of the problems on each Test Review? When do you turn those in?
  • Have you found the calendar of what to do each week?
  • When is each test available and what do you need to take with you?
  • Are you allowed to use a calculator on the tests?
  • When and how much homework do you turn in for the first time?
  • Make a note of all the parts included in the first homework packet you must turn in.
  • How do you turn in the homework? Notice that the deadlines are for you to send it, not for me to receive it.
  • Is there online tutoring available? How do you get a username and password? Make a note about that.
