Help / FAQ's

Questions about math:

If you don't understand how to do a problem or you don't understand what something means, you have several options, depending on how soon you want an answer and how difficult your problem is.

  • If you have a question about a homework problem or you don't quite understand something, you could post a message on the message boards. In order to give other people a chance to help you (and get some class participation credit), I will generally not answer these questions myself right away. Don't forget to do your part to help by answering other people's questions that you know the answer to. (If nobody answers your question, I will answer you, however.) I prefer that most math questions get asked here, since often other people have the same (or a similar) question and they can get the answer here.

  • If you need more help than this, you could contact a tutor (either in person or online). Stopping by one of ACC's Learning Labs to talk with someone in person is often a great way to get help.

  • Of course, you can always contact me. I am available via email, phone (you can make an appointment for me to call you in the evenings or on weekends if necessary), or in my office hours.

Questions about the course (administrative stuff):

First, check through my webpages to see if your question is already answered. I have spent a lot of time working on these pages and I have tried to anticipate common problems or questions. Please don't just fire off an email to me just because you couldn't be bothered to look first. This site is designed so that most things are (hopefully) easy to find. (If I have forgotten something important, I will be more than happy to fix that when I discover the problem.)

If you have questions about:

  • Policies - This gives information about grading policy, including how grades are computed (homework, quiz, class participation requirments), late work, course requiremtns, withdrawal, time requirements, and setting up and using the computer software, among other things. This should be your first stop to look for most things. You might even want to print these pages out at the beginning of the semester (go here for a printable version).

  • Course announcements - Be SURE to check the Announcements section of Blackboard every 2 or 3 days. This is the way I communicate with the class as a whole.

  • Getting Started - This is a good checklist to follow at the beginning of the semester to be sure you haven't forgotten to do anything (including the Orientation Forms).

  • Schedule - When are the tests? What should I be working on this week? What are the other deadlines?

  • Homework/Test Reviews - What is the homework assignment? Where can I get the extra homework sheets and the test reviews? What do I need to do to be sure I get full credit for my homework? What do I need to do to take a test in the Testing Center?

  • Blackboard help - Questions about where course announcements are posted, message boards, and the electronic gradebook.

Of course, you can always contact me. I am available via email, phone (you can make an appointment for me to call you in the evenings or on weekends if necessary), or in my office hours. Feel free to contact me with questions that I have not covered in my website (or that need further clarification or explanation).

Questions about the software:

If your question is very general or about how to get started or how to make good use of the software, the following might be of use:

If you are having problems with your computer or getting the software to install or run, please contact PLATO (Academic Systems) Technical Support. Please understand that I cannot provide you with technical support on the software or your computer. If you can't get anywhere with the PLATO (Academic Systems) Tech Support line, you may email me and I might have an idea, but I can't promise you this.
