Meeting Minutes - October 23, 2002

A special meeting of the CE Marketing Committee was held on October 23, 2002 at HBC.

Attending: Tim Arndt, Cynthia Cone, Laurie Fluker, Jan Frustaglia, Jerry Haba, Sandy Gaskin, Donetta Goodall, Sharrion Jenkins, Mike Midgley, Bruncha Milaszewski, Marcela Nouzovska, Javier Olguin, Bonnie Spanogle, and Kirk White

Purpose: Develop options on how to best market the services and courses - both credit and CE - that we will offer at the Downtown Education Center.

Discussion

I. Review of September 25, 2002 Minutes

The minutes of the September 25 meeting were approved as written.

II. Fall Enrollments Update

Three of the four college-credit courses scheduled at the DEC for the second 8-week session were successful:
English Composition I: 28 students (filled to capacity)
United States History I: 30 students (filled to capacity)
Spanish Conversation: 5 students (capacity: 17)
The integrated Real Estate Mathematics course as well as the five add-on CE courses had to be cancelled because of low enrollment.

III. Discussion of Fall Marketing Campaign

The committee members felt that the campaign was very successful, particularly the bus placards, the use of the advising offices, the "Going Downtown?" slogan, and the special link on the main ACC website. Members also felt that the recent addition of a map as well as parking and bus transportation information to the site will be very helpful. The table tents were not as practical or effective as planned because they had to be replaced too often.

The committee recommended that the current students be surveyed to determine where they work, how they heard about these courses, why they took these courses at the DEC, whether or not they would take DEC classes again, what other courses they would like to see, how accessible they felt the DEC to be, and whether or not the DEC was beneficial for them. Bonnie Spanogle will draft the survey form to make it compatible for Scantron scanning.

IV. Spring Courses

The following college-credit courses will be scheduled at the DEC for the spring semester:
English Composition I, two sections
Algebra
US History
Texas History
Child Development
Sociology
CE courses under consideration include Conversational Spanish (perhaps for selected occupational groups such as hospitality or law), an integrated ESL section or perhaps a special ESL section conducted in conjunction with the Mexican Consulate, and a repeat of some of the special career change topics. Other ideas suggested were integrated Hospitality Management courses, a Customer Service Certificate course, and State Theater School of Acting classes.

V. Marketing Options for the Spring Semester

The marketing plan used for the Fall semester will be continued for the Spring semester. Posters and handbills, however, will replace the table tents.

VI. Other Actions

Javier Olguin reported that he had successfully negotiated for an additional 25 free parking spaces at the DEC, 10 in the parking garage and 15 in the parking lot. The agreement will remain in effect until mid-December with a potential option for the Spring as well.

The committee agreed that meetings with American Youthworks continue with an eye toward easing the path for these students to transition to ACC CE technical courses or to ACC college-credit core courses. Kirk White reported that dual credit courses in Medical Terminology are also being discussed for this group of students.

The next meeting of the CE Marketing Committee is scheduled for Wednesday, December 4 at 1:30 pm.
