Your TSI/TASP/THEA status:
You must learn whether you are TSI/TASP-mandated to
take developmental math. (Most students taking this course are.) Ask your advisor
if you don't know.
- If you are TSI/TASP-mandated to take developmental math, then you are REQUIRED
to remain in the course all semester long, not withdrawing or being withdrawn,
in order to remain in fully good standing in school. This is a very
strong condition. It is vital that you learn whether that applies to you.
Why are there such rules?
- Once you start taking MATD courses, if you are TSI-mandated to be in remediation
in mathematics, you must enroll for and stay in all semester long, a developmental
math course each semester until you finish either Intermediate Algebra, MATD 0390,
or Developing Mathematical Thinking, MATD 0385, or until you "pass" the TCOMPASS or THEA test.
- If some difficulty arises with your remaining in the course but are required
to be in remediation, there is an alternative, known as CCA. But you can only
do that once in your college career at ACC. If you need a referral for this,
please ask me. You really should decide on this before the course is half
finished.
- This course WILL NOT prepare you to retake the TCOMP or THEA and "pass"
it. If anyone has advised you that it will, they are confused. It is the NEXT
course in the sequence, MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra, that comes closest
to preparing you for that.
- Students in some degree/certificate programs at ACC are allowed to delay
beginning their mandatory math remediation until their third semester of enrollment.
During that time they may study for and try to pass the TCOMP/THEA test. However,
once such a student enrolls for a developmental math course, then he is required
to remain in it and register for math every semester until he completes it.
If you are interested in the possibility of the delay, you must consult your
advisor before you begin developmental math.
