Skipping Class

When a course is set up to go rather slowly and carefully through material in order to give everyone an opportunity to thoroughly understand the material, usually some students feel that they don't need to attend all of the classes or do all of the activities. Unfortunately, not all the students who feel that way will succeed in learning the material well. Thus, I set up my class policies (as do virtually all teachers of developmental courses) assuming that students who enroll in the class need the instruction to learn the material. However, I am willing to be somewhat flexible in specific ways.

If you fee that you are one of the students who doesn't need to come to class to do well in the course, and you want to have permission to not be penalized for missing class, not doing the homework, etc., you must discuss that with me outside of class before you miss the classes or homework.

In order to give you permission to miss any of this work, I will require some evidence that you have already learned the appropriate material and also some evidence that this is the right course for you.

I am available for these discussions by telephone, email, or in person, but not during class. I'd be delighted to hear from you before the class begins if you would like to discuss it in advance. I certainly don't want to make anyone spend any more time and energy than is necessary to meet their goals.
