Developmental Math to prepare for TASP

You may take the TASP test at any time you wish. We recommend that you purchase the official TASP Study Guide (about $15) and review the material before taking the test. You should not expect to prepare for it during the semester in which you take MATD 0350 (DVM 1153), Prealgebra. This course does not cover nearly enough material. If you feel that your skills are strong enough to prepare for the TASP in one semester, you should be in one of the more advanced courses that will provide more help to you.

The mathematics skills needed for the TASP are not all covered in any one course. Which sequence of courses you need depends on the skills you can demonstrate when you enter ACC and what college-credit math and science courses for which you want to prepare.

If you only need to take one college-credit course and that is MATH 1332 (MTH 1513), Topics in Mathematics (Math Its Spirit and Use), MATH 1342 (MTH 1563), Elementary Statistics, or MTH 1573, Mathematics for Measurement, then the best course for you to take after MATD 0350 (DVM 1153), Prealgebra, is MATD 0360 (DVM 1163), Topics in Developmental Math. It was designed to prepare students for these courses and for the TASP test.

So far there has not been much demand for MATD 0360 (DVM 1163), so very few sections are offered. MATD 0370 (DVM 1173), Elementary Algebra, is an acceptable substitute, although it is not ideal. It has a much heavier emphasis on the algebra topics and less work on geometry, etc. than is ideal.

If you take MATD 0370 (DVM 1173), but want more work on the non-algebra topics covered on the TASP test, we have MATD 0162 (DVM 1051), Tasp Math Preparation, a one hour course in which you explore the required TASP topics and work on those for which your skills are less strong. You may enroll for that at the same time as 0370 (1173) or after you complete 0370 (1173).

If your degree plan requires any chemistry, physics, electronics, or any college-level math courses besides those listed earlier, you will need to take MATD 0390 (DVM 1193), Intermediate Algebra, after completing MATD 0370 (DVM 1173), Elementary Algebra. This sequence will prepare you (mathematically) for beginning college courses in any of the disciplines.
