Quiz 00.

You will earn quiz credit for this. You are expected to do it by the end of the week before the course begins because it is really a part of the Orientation.

To finish this quiz, you need to find some specific parts of our course documents, demonstrate that you understand how to prepare and submit a quiz file in StatsPortal, and demonstrate that you have found and understood some essential parts of the grading procedure for the course. This is not supposed to cause you stress. You will earn full credit for this quiz for any reasonable attempt. When you try this, and then look at the answer key after the deadline, I hope that it help you feel "oriented" to how the course works.

First, read the guidelines for preparing quizzes in this class. Find them in the first-day handout, "Information about the specific section of the course" in the table at the end, under Quizzes, entitled "Guidelines for preparing quizzes."

In this quiz, you will prepare a document in that form, with answers to the three questions below. To begin, start your electronic file for the quiz, and name it as described. Look at this pdf file and set up your file like this to start.

  1. What notes are allowed during tests? Find the list of what notes you'll be allowed to take to each test. "Copy and paste" the part about what can be on the notes and how many pages are allowed and put that into the Appendix of this quiz assignment. Read it, too, of course, and from that, in the answer portion of the quiz, write how many pages of handwritten notes you are allowed for each of the five tests.(Find this from the first-day handout, "Information about the specific section of the course" in the table at the end, under Tests, Description.)
  2. What do you have to submit to get homework credit? Find the description (in the HW 1 file) and copy that and put it into the appendix of your quiz document. Then, in the answer portion of this quiz, tell me whether you are expected to turn in actual solutions to homework problems when you submit this to earn your homework credit. (Find this from the first-day handout, under Homework.)
  3. Compute a grade. Find the grading policy for the course in the first-day handout. At the end of that section, there is an example of how grades are computed. Follow that example and compute the grade for the following student. The student had

Make a folder on your computer to save your quizzes into and save this one there now. If your last name is Sanders, then this quiz file name should be q00sanders.

If you have started in StatsPortal, then submit your quiz file there, under "Assignments." Instructions are provided there. Here is a preview of how to do submit assignments in StatsPortal. (Here's more guidance on using StatsPortal.)

If you will not start StatsPortal by the first day of class, then you may send your quiz file through the Digital Drop Box in Blackboard. (Every student should be in Blackboard about a week before class begins, or within one day after they enroll in the course.) After you send it to me, look in your Digital Drop Box and try to remove it. If you can remove it, then it wasn't actually sent. Try again and be sure to choose "Send."

If you cannot submit your quiz file in either of those ways, email it to me and explain why you can't do it one of the other ways. I will help you figure out how to get started.

You are expected to send this quiz in by the end of the day Friday before classes begin. But the deadline is Monday night of the first week of class at 11:00 p.m. That allows you some flexibility in case you run into difficulties. In fact, this quiz will be counted even if it is several days late, since I do know that some students are enrolling for classes after the first day of class. NO CREDIT WILL BE GIVEN FOR LATE QUIZZES after this quiz! The next quiz is due by the first Thursday night of class. After that, remember that there are two quizzes due EVERY WEEK. Find them at the end of the lessons. There are two lessons to be covered each week.

On Tuesday morning of the first week of class, I will grade the Quiz 00's and record the grades. At that time, I will email the class telling all of you that grades are recorded. If you submitted it and don't have a grade, then we can discuss what went wrong. Email me and tell me how and when you submitted it and we will track it down. If you didn't submit it, then please do so as soon as you can and email me and tell me how you have done that. I will be lenient about credit for this one quiz only. It is very important that you use this opportunity to learn how to submit quizzes and how to check for yourself to see that they are submitted.

Starting with the next quiz, I will expect that you have signed on to StatsPortal and will submit it there. If you can't, you may continue to send me quizzes through the Digital Drop Box, but I will express increasing agitation until you obtain StatsPortal and start using it. It is a very important part of the materials for this course!
