Mary Parker's notes on MATH 1342 homework problems, BPS 4th edition
Chapters 1-6 are the part of the course on "Descriptive Statistics." Most of the problems involve taking a given set of data and describing something about the information given by the data. Some students are used to having a math course show them a specific algebraic technique and then assign several problems where they use that specific technique. The activities and thoughts needed in Chapters 1-6 are quite different from that and so are particularly challenging. These notes are provided to help students make the transition from earlier math courses to learning statistics.
By the time students finish these chapters, we expect that they will have learned enough about using the resources available at ACC to support their work in the course. These resources include their instructor's office hours, the lab class, using StatTutor in StatsPortal, or tutoring, etc.
In these notes, I refer frequently to the answers in the e-book in StatsPortal. The answers in the back of the book are shortened versions of those. The answers in the back of the book omit all the required graphs, do not include all the four-step process, and, in general, have shortened explanations. If a student is struggling, the more full answers in the e-book are usually very useful, as is the StatTutor option in StatsPortal.
