What can you learn in College Algebra?

We learn to look at algebra from a more sophisticated viewpoint than in high school algebra. In particular, we emphasize graphing and analyzing various types of functions, some of which you have seen before, such as quadratic functions. There are also some new ones, such as exponential and logarithmic functions. For example, if you put some money in the bank at a certain rate of interest, how long will it take your money to double? We'll learn to solve problems like that here.

Purpose of the course:

This course is designed to teach students the algebra needed to prepare them for business calculus. Many students enroll in this course for other reasons. In some cases, this is the best course, and, in others, it's not. Look over my advising pages for more information.

Prerequisite:

It is important that you know the prerequisite material before you start the course. That means that you should be comfortable with the algebra from your second year of high school algebra. We have a prerequisite study sheet for this course on the Web.
