Flow charts of Austin Community College Mathematics Courses

Each sequence in this chart begins with developmental courses, which do not earn credit toward any degree or certificate.

Just as the sequence in each chart indicates the course prerequisite, the colors indicate the required assessment score to begin the sequence at that course.  We also provide a list of courses with their prerequisites.

Purple: Developmental course
TASP: below 230 or
COMPASS:: below 39

Yellow: College-level course
 "Passing TASP"
TASP 230+ or COMPASS 39+

Blue:  Developmental course
For students preparing for algebra-intensive college courses

Orange: College-level course
“College Algebra level”
TASP 270+ or COMPASS 69+

Green: College-level course
Must have course prerequisite
in addition to “College Algebra level”
TASP 270+ or COMPASS 39+

Because not all of the college-level courses count in every degree, several sequences are shown. For more information about what counts in each degree, consult the ACC catalog or the catalog of the school to which you intend to transfer.

Most students do not start at the beginning of a sequence because they remember some of the mathematics from their high school courses and demonstrate that on the ACC Assessment Test or the equivalent. Once you start a sequence, you may not skip courses in the sequence based on re-testing unless you are advised to do so by a full-time mathematics instructor acting as a mathematics advisor.

Sequence for mathematics, science, or engineering majors

Many students overestimate their prior preparation and current ability level. Current knowledge of prerequisite material is required in all courses in this sequence. Consult a faculty member in mathematics to verify placement. Caution is urged.

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra

MATH 1314,
College Algebra
*

(Students who make excellent grades in ACC's MATD 0390 may go directly to MATH 1316 if they will need no further review of high school algebra.)

MATH 1316, Trigonometry **

MATH 2412, Precalculus

MATH 2413, Calculus I

MATH 2414, Calculus II

MATH 2415, Calculus III

MATH 2420 Differential Equations ***

MTH 2254, Calculus IV
(Vector Calculus)

MATH 2318, Linear Algebra ****

* The prerequisite for College Algebra is a COMPASS score of 69 (or possibly a somewhat lower COMPASS score depending on high school courses) or MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra.

** The prerequisite for MATH 1316, Trigonometry, is one of the following

Students who have completed high school Algebra II and make a COMPASS Algebra score of 79 or above may be allowed to enroll in MATH 1316, Trigonometry. See a full-time mathematics faculty member for details.

*** The prerequisite for MTH 2164, Differential Equations, is MATH 2414, Calculus II.

**** The prerequisite for MATH 2318, Linear Algebra, is MATH 2415, Calculus III.

Sequence for business majors

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra

MATH 1314, College Algebra *

MATH 1324, Math for Bus and Eco *

MATH 1425, Business Calculus I **

MATH 1426, Business Calculus II

* The prerequisite for either College Algebra or Math for Business and Economics is a COMPASS score of 69 (or possibly a somewhat lower COMPASS score depending on high school courses) or MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra.

** The expected prerequisite for Business Calculus I at UT-Austin is College Algebra unless you score high enough on the math portion of the SAT II. The required prerequisite for Business Calculus I at SWTSU and other colleges is Math for Business and Economics.

Sequence for elementary education majors

Texas has changed the requirements for Elementary Education Majors and the courses MATH 1335 and MATH 1336 will no longer be offered after Summer 2001.  Students will be required to take one regular mathematics course and then two specialized courses for prospective teachers – MATH 1350 and MATH 1351.   More information will be available on this website by July 2001.

Sequence for elementary education majors through Summer 2001

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

*

MATH 1335, Modern Math I

MATH 1336, Modern Math II

* An additional math course is required for teacher certification. Not all college-level math courses will meet this requirement. (In particular, MATH 1332 usually does not.) Check with four-year school to which you plan to transfer to learn which courses will satisfy this requirement and their degree requirements. Most schools require that you take that additional course BEFORE you take the two Modern Math courses. Then look above to determine the prerequisite requirements for that course and follow them. If, for some reason, you choose to take the Modern Math courses first, these are the prerequisite requirements for them.

Sequence for non-science and non-business majors.

Check the requirements at the school to which you intend to transfer to clarify which math course is required for your degree. If College Algebra is required, look at the sequence for a business degree to see the requirements for College Algebra.

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0360, Topics in Developmental Math OR MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

*

MATH 1332, Topics in Mathematics

MATH 1342, Elementary Statistics

MATH 1333, Mathematics for Measurement
