You shouldn't take any math course unless you have enough time to do the required work outside of class. That means about two or three times as many hours per week outside of class as in class, and that time needs to be spread out over the week, not concentrated on one or two days. Look at your schedule now. If you sign up for a course when you don't really have time to do the work, you'll do poorly and be frustrated. In all of the advising we do, we assume that you will be devoting this much time to the course that you choose.
Sometimes students who do not have adequate study time available simply sign up for a lower-level course over material that they have already mastered. In general, we discourage this. In the first place, you are not making full use of your money and the state's money when you enroll in a course that you don't really need. In the second place, you are likely to be somewhat bored and may decide that you want to skip the next course because this one was so easy for you. Students who do that almost invariably get low grades in their subsequent course and are very frustrated. Skipping courses in the sequence is a bad idea.
Students who take more courses than they have time to do often wind up withdrawing from one or more courses. While a withdrawal doesn't count against your GPA, the state now has an upper limit on the number of courses an individual can take at in-state tuition rates. We understand that classes you try and withdraw from count against that total, so withdrawing from several classes over a period of several years may jeopardize your ability to complete a degree by taking courses at in-state tuition rates.
Print out these pages right now, fill in the blanks and then fill out the weekly calendar. Make sure that this is all realistic before you enroll for your classes.
