Which version should you use?

All the versions of MINITAB will be adequate for doing the required work in this course.

The Minitab Manual accompanying our textbook describes how to use Version 15. It is virtually the same as Version 14, which we have. (See below.) Because we have a limited number of licenses for Version 14, served through the network, it is possible that it may not be accessible at all times. Because of some connectivity problems at some outlying campuses, you may see two different icons for MTB 14. The second one, labeled "slow" has access to more copies of MTB, but those are on a server at a different campus and will take about 5 minutes to load. When they load, they should run well.

For several years we have had Version 12 available in the Math Dept computer classrooms, in the ITFD computer labs, and at some other places. The icon for it says MTB 12. That will continue to be available for your use. We own many more licenses for that, so there should not be any problem with availability. Version 12 is adequate to do the required work in this course. Some of the dialog boxes look somewhat different than those in Version 14/15.

If you just have to use version 12 occasionally, you don't need any extra explanation of it. The only relevant differences in capability between them are in Chapters 13-17, where MINITAB 14 supports analyzing either original datasets or summaries and MINITAB 12 only supports analyzing original datasets, and not summaries.

If you have purchased a used copy of Minitab 12, Student Edition, from another student, I can send you access to some information about how it differs from MINITAB 14. Email mparker@austincc.edu.

Differences in Versions 14 and 15: I asked Betsy Greenberg, the author of our MINITAB Manual, what differences she found between the two versions while she was writing the Manual. She said that, in working through problems in all of these chapters, she only found one minor difference, which was in control charts, in Chapter 11. The differences between the two versions are not in the user interface, so they should not concern you.
