StatsPortal for MATH 1342, Elementary Statistics

Use this URL: http://courses.bfwpub.com/bps6e.php (If you just follow a link you get by searching the web, you may not get the current version of it!)

This is a web portal with many resources to support students' learning. It has many resources, including StatTutor, video and "print" manuals for both Minitab and CrunchIt, lots of videos, applets, a Study Guide, and the Crunch-It statistical software.

From the main website for the software at http://courses.bfwpub.com/bps6e.php you can follow the link at the bottom of the page to "System Requirements" to see what you need to run it. (This will open a separate window in your browser.) It works best in the browsers Firefox 10.0 or later and Internet Explorer 6.0 or later. Of all the plug-ins required, you can skip those until you need them. You definitely need to be able to read PDF files (Adobe Acrobat Reader) and you will also need JavaScript to run the applets.

You may purchase access to this in three different ways:

  • If you buy a new textbook, the textbook is packaged with a folder including an access code for StatsPortal. (Used textbooks do not include this, of course, since the student who used the book before use the StatsPortal code.) Once the package is opened, it cannot be returned.
  • You may purchase the access code online with a credit card from the publisher for about $94 (January 2014)
http://courses.bfwpub.com/bps6e.php. If you purchase it this way, you can "return" it and get a refund for about 10 days, if you have not viewed or printed more material than they expected students to do in the first two weeks. See the website for details about their refund policy and go ahead and click on "refund request" to see that. If you want to get a refund, you should not look at (or access in any way) more than the first three chapters. If you have opened more material than that, you may not be eligible for a refund.
  • You may purchase the folder with the access code in the bookstore separately from the textbook. This folder is a few dollars more expensive than purchasing the access code online. Once the folder is opened it cannot be returned.

To sign up for StatsPortal,

    • As early as a week or so before classes begin, go to http://courses.bfwpub.com/bps6e.php  and click on the link “Register Activation Code.” (Or, if you want to buy the access code online, choose the "Purchase" option here.)
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to find this course, by choosing Texas, Austin Community College , your instructor’s name, and then their course.
    • You are identified here by your email address. Give your ACC email address and choose a password, which doesn't have to be the same as the password you use for your ACC email address.

Sometimes students have difficulty at some step along the way and try to start over. Often they are unable to do so because their validation code has already been used - by them when they tried to sign on earlier!
If you have difficulty like that, then first determine whether you are registered in the system by trying to sign on, using your email address, and claim that you forgot your password. The system will try to send your password to the email address.

If that doesn't work, please follow the link to Contact Us - Tech Support at the bottom of the main page http://courses.bfwpub.com/bps6e.php. Either call or fill out the form requesting help.
