Text: Basic Mathematics, Bittinger, Keedy, 7th edition
Prerequisite: none
Welcome to Basic Math Skills. When you have successfully
completed this course, you will be ready to go on to Prealgebra
(DVM 1153). You will also have taken your first step towards preparing
yourself for the TASP exam.
To succeed in this course, there are several basic requirements:
a. have the prerequisite knowledge
b. devote the requisite time and effort:
i. attend all classes
ii. do all of the reading and problems which are assigned and do them on time
iii. review the material and prepare yourself for exams
Requisite Time and Effort
The only way for you to learn mathematics is by doing it. You
should expect to study two - three hours outside of class for
each hour you spend in class. That means you will probably need
at least 6 - 9 hours per week outside of class to study the book
and do the homework. If you do not have that amount of time to
spend on this course, then you have overloaded yourself and will
probably need to drop a course or two. If you are required to
take this course, you will probably want to drop another course.
Regular attendance is required
If you are absent more than three times (more than once for those
weekend classes which meet once a week), you may be withdrawn.
When you miss a class, it is your responsibility to try to find
out what you missed (or guess on the basis of the syllabus) and
work on that material before the next class.
Homework
Homework is an essential part of the course. Doing homework is
the way to learn mathematics.
Tests
There are generally four major tests during this course and a final exam at the end. Your instructor may give additional tests as well. He/she will inform you of the exact dates for each test and what it will cover.
Some or all of the tests may be given in the Testing Center. You will be given a period of several days in which to take each exam. You will be expected to find time to do this outside of class since the whole purpose of this is to save class time for teaching and working examples.
Tests in the Testing Centers are not timed so you may take as
long as you like (if you arrive early enough). You should allow
yourself extra time so you have no problem finishing the test.
Final Exam
The final exam will be a departmental exam. You wil be tested
on material covered in the course that you must know if you are
to continue your studies in mathematics.
HELP: Learning Lab
ACC offers free tutoring at most campuses and sites on a first
come first served basis. In addition, computers with tutorial
software for this course are available. If you are having difficulty
with the course, you should see a tutor or your instructor at
once.
Diagnostic Test
A test is given during the first week of class to determine your
strengths and weaknesses. If you miss the day it is given in class,
you will be asked to take it in the Testing Center. If you do
very well, you might wish to discuss with your instructor the
possibility of moving up to Prealgebra (DVM 1153).
Switching classes
If you wish to switch to Prealgebra (or a higher class), you must
do so within the appropriate time period. Ask your instructor
when the deadline is.
Withdrawal policy
If you are thinking about withdrawing from this course, talk to
your instructor first. Perhaps he or she may have some helpful
suggestions. Make sure that you understand the consequences. If
you wish to withdraw and stop attending, you must realize it is
your responsibility to formally withdraw from the class by filing
the official form with the Admissions Office by the withdrawal
date. While your instructor has the right to withdraw you for
lack of attendance, lack of progress toward the course objectives,
failure to do required work in the course, or other reasons, he/she
is not required to do so. If neither you nor the instructor has
withdrawn you by the final withdrawal date, the instructor will
be forced to give you a performance grade (probably an F) for
the course.
TASP Warning: If you are taking this course to comply with
Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) requirements*, Texas
law requires that:
i) if you are not "continually in attendance" and "making progress" in this course, you should be withdrawn from the course by your instructor,
ii) if you withdraw yourself from this course or are withdrawn
by your instructor, you will be automatically withdrawn from all
of your other college courses if this is the only TASP-mandated
course you are taking.
* If you are unsure whether or not this warning applies
to you, see an ACC advisor immediately.
Note: If you are among those students who cannot drop this course
without being withdrawn from school, then you should be particularly
careful to not begin at a level which is too difficult for you
given your current knowledge and the time you have to devote to
this course.
