DVM 1173 / DVM 1192 - Combined Elementary and Intermediate Algebra
(Five credit hours, six lecture hours per week during a 16-week semester, no lab hours)
Description: This fast track combination algebra course/courses streamlines content for the purpose of moving adult students more quickly through developmental mathematics. The design is to improve retention and persistence of students; the students feel like it is one class, but they do the work for two. Throughout the course problem solving and the concept of function are demonstrated and emphasized. Multiple representations of a problem are encouraged including verbal, symbolic, graphical, and numerical representations.

Expanded prerequisite information: Students need a strong prealgebra background to succeed in this course. As a general rule, this should include either an A in ACC's Prealgebra course, a teacher's recommendation that the student take an accelerated course, or a good recollection of the material from Algebra I in high school. Students will be expected to make above 70 on the Elementary Algebra pretest during the first class period. A good way to prepare for this is to work through the Prerequisite Review Sheet for 1173.
Other information: This course is equivalent in credit, time required, and workload, to two regular courses. Students must plan their time commitments accordingly. Course requirements also include some group work in most sections, thus students must be enthusiastic about and prepared to engage in group work with the other students in their class.
