Precalculus: Functions and Graphs

Information for Students

1999-2000

Text: Precalculus: Functions & Graphs, 6th edition, by M.A. Munem and J.P. Yizze

Prerequisites: Trigonometry, MATH 1316, or an equivalent course. You should also have current algebra skills at the level of MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra. If you do not have current knowledge of these topics, you should ask your instructor about course level changes.

Course Objectives: This course is designed to teach students the algebraic concepts and review the trigonometric concepts needed for scientific/engineering calculus.

Attendance is required in this course. Students who miss more than 4 classes may be withdrawn. After the withdrawal date each semester, neither the student nor the instructor may initiate a withdrawal. It is the student's responsibility to initiate all withdrawals in this course. The instructor may withdraw students for excessive absences (4) or failure to meet course objectives but makes no commitment to do this for the student.

Incomplete grades (I) will be given only in very rare circumstances. Generally, to receive a grade of I, a student must have taken all examinations, be passing, and have a personal tragedy occur after the last date to withdraw which prevents course completion.

Testing, Grading, and Homework: The testing scheme given with the syllabus and calendar is only one possible scheme. Your instructor may use a different one. Your instructor will give you an additional handout with details about testing, grading, and homework for your section of this course.

Outside Help: If you feel that you will need extra help for the course, you can sign up for the lab course for Precalculus or the group tutoring sessions in Precalculus that are being organized in some of the Learning Labs. You also have access to free walk-in tutoring in the Learning Lab.

Use of Graphing Utilities: As with any course where either graphing or scientific calculators are used, the calculator will be used as a supportive tool. This course is not about calculator usage, but about precalculus concepts. We will use graphing calculators when their use enhances the understanding of a mathematical idea. Graphing calculators are not required for this course. However, as you progress through the semester you may find it convenient to purchase your own. Individual instructors may vary in how often and in what manner they utilize these type of calculators.

Transferability: This course transfers to most four-year colleges. (This does not mean it counts in every degree -- if your degree requires three semesters of calculus, this course is getting you ready for that rather than meeting the math requirement in itself.) Although we do not have a Texas Common Course Number for it at this time, we expect to obtain one soon. The Texas Common Course Number for Precalculus is for a three-hour course (MATH 2312), thus we had to ask them to create a four-hour one. We expect this will happen. That number will almost certainly be MATH 2412. If you are concerned about transfer, obviously, you should check with the school to which you wish to transfer.
