Curriculum Revision for Developmental Mathematics
Starting January 2000
Beginning in Spring 2000, the developmental mathematics sequence and curriculum has been revised from four courses to three courses. All of the courses have been revised in terms of the content and calendars.
New main developmental math sequence and curriculum:
|
Basic Math Skills (revised) MATD 0330 |
|
Elementary Algebra (revised) MATD 0370 |
|
Intermediate Algebra (revised) MATH 0390 |
I'm currently in the MATD sequence of courses. What course should I take next spring?
Take the same course next spring that you would have taken in the old sequence. However, if you complete Basic Math Skills next spring (or after), you will take Elementary Algebra next. Beginning in the Summer 2000, Prealgebra, MATD 0350, will not be offered. The material covered in the Prealgebra course has been moved to the revised Basic Math Skills course and the revised Elementary Algebra course.

In order to condense the material into three courses, we have dropped a few topics from the curriculum, moved some topics from one course to another, and eliminated some of the "double coverage" (meaning the places where we have covered the same material in two courses, but at slightly different levels). We have looked carefully at what is needed for the college-credit courses and we believe that this sequence will serve the needs of the students to prepare for later courses very well.
Return to the
top of this document. Will these revised courses meet and be structured like the current courses?
The revised Basic Math Skills course meets for four hours per week (and proportionately more in the shorter sessions), just as the Elementary Algebra and Intermediate Algebra courses do. Aside from the number of hours, the courses will be structured as the current courses are and we expect to provide more focused lab classes for students who need them. These lab classes will provide assistance in study skills as well as tutoring help on the homework and additional explanations of the concepts. We will start these labs with the Basic Math Skills course in Spring 2000. Some students, whose assessment test scores are in the lower part of the range, will be required to attend the labs from the beginning of the semester. During the semester, when a student's grades drop below passing, the student will be required to start attending a lab class. Each student who enrolls for the course will be advised that they must schedule their courses and other obligations in such a way that they could attend one of the lab classes.

Will there be any changes in the catalog descriptions of the courses?
Some minor changes are being made to reflect the new prerequisite statement for Elementary Algebra, to delete the material for Prealgebra, and a few wording changes in the remaining course descriptions.
