Mathematics Courses -- Old Course Numbers

The purpose of this page is to provide information about old course numbers in order to assist faculty members, advisors, and students analyze student transcripts.

The dates in the "Notes" column, based on recollections, are provided to help you see which were changed or discontinued courses and when they were discontinued and which are ongoing courses whose number changed when ACC went to Texas Common Course Numbers. The exact dates are not very important, since if you have a transcript with that course number on it, obviously that course number was in effect on that date. There was only one instance where the same number meant two different courses, depending on the date, and the precise date for that change is given. (See MTH 1643 below, which changed in Fall 1977.) The dates with ? after them might easily be off by a year or two. It is true that a more precise list of dates could be obtained by going through 27 years of catalogs, but that doesn't seem to be necessary.

In the course numbers listed below in which the prefix is MTH, the last digit is the number of credit hours. In those whose prefix is MATH or MATD, the second digit is the number of credit hours.

Developmental Mathematics courses and Math Lab courses are listed in another document. None of those are applicable for degree credit.

* Over the last 20 years, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board has had various rules regarding applied mathematics courses. The ACC mathematics department has developed and offered various applied mathematics courses to meet the changing needs of our workforce programs and the changing rules of THECB about what types of courses can apply to degrees. At the current time (2000), no applied mathematics courses are on THECB's list of approved courses and THECB has specifically said that "Technical Mathematics" is not an allowed course. We have developed a new course, MATH 1333, Mathematics for Measurement, which is a general elective course with a focus on specific mathematics topics relevant to measurement. We expect that students who are interested in measurement may find that a useful course. This might include students majoring in various areas in the social and behavioral sciences, in workforce programs, or in any other program which involves measurement. More information is available.
