Re: Advising Information for Developmental Instructors

As Developmental Instructors we are often asked by students – "What course should I take next?" or "Should I take the TASP test now?" This sheet is meant to help you in answering these types of questions.

We know that some students do enroll for "B or better" courses, but we ask you to advise all the students to take the TASP test. Part of qualifying for the "B or better" is retaking the TASP after exiting remediation and generally students will find it easier to pass the TASP than to get a B in a college-level course.

Advising Students in MATD 0162 TASP Math Preparation

Advise students individually based on their performance on the practice TASP tests in this class and on the other information you have about their skill level. This course does not meet the prerequisite for any other courses. Until the student is able to pass the TASP, then their placement after this one-hour course is the same as it was before they took the course. If you believe that the student should have a higher placement, discuss with the campus-based Assistant Task Force Chair some ways the student can demonstrate their skills and qualify for a higher-level course.

Advising Students in MATD 0290 Intermediate Algebra

This course is part of the "fast-track" algebra course where students do both Elementary and Intermediate Algebra in one semester. Advise students completing this course in the same way that you would advise students completing MATD 0390.

Advising Students in MATD 0360 Topics in Developmental Math

Students that make a grade of A, B, or C should be encouraged to take the TASP. If students have not already taken practice tests like the TASP during the course, they should be encouraged to take the practice tests in the inexpensive Official TASP Study Guide to prepare for the TASP. Below are three options for enrollment the following semester.

  1. Students may enroll in MATH 1333 Math for Measurement.
  2. Students who completed high school Algebra II may enroll in MATH 1332 Topics in Mathematics or MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics.
  3. Students who did not complete high school Algebra II are not eligible to enroll in any college-level math courses until they pass the TASP or pass MATD 0390 Intermediate Algebra. Such students should take MATD 0162 TASP Math Preparation until they pass the TASP.

Students that make a D, F, or IP should retake MATD 0360 Topics in Mathematics.

Advising Students in MATD 0330 Basic Math Skills

Students completing this course are not ready to retake the TASP. Below are three options for their enrollment the following semester.

  1. Students intending to go on to MATH 1314 College Algebra or MATH 1324 Math for Business and Economics should take MATD 0370 Elementary Algebra. Students that make a C in MATD 0330 Basic Math Skills should be strongly urged to restudy Chapter 6 and any other material in which they were weak before beginning MATD 0370 Elementary Algebra. You should also encourage them to seek help from the Learning Labs in the next class.
  2. Particularly strong students who need both Elementary and Intermediate Algebra might want to consider the fast-track combination of MATD 0370/0290, which is offered at NRG in the fall and spring.
  3. Students intending to take only MATH 1332 Topics in Mathematics, MATH 1333 Math for Measurement, or MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics may want to consider MATD 0360 Topics in Developmental Mathematics to prepare for those. It is at the same level as MATD 0370 Elementary Algebra, but has more emphasis on the non-algebra topics along with some algebra to prepare for these courses and for the TASP test. It is offered at CYP and RVS in most semesters.

Students that make a D, F, or IP should retake MATD 0330 Basic Math Skills.

Advising Students in MATD 0370 Elementary Algebra

Students that make an A, B, or C should be encouraged to take the TASP. All students, but particularly those who make Cs, should be encouraged to take the practice tests in the inexpensive Official TASP Study Guide to prepare for the TASP. The state requires that a student who has not passed the TASP take it again after completing remediation. Below are two options for their enrollment the following semester.

  1. Students who completed high school Algebra II may enroll in MATH 1332 Topics in Mathematics, MATH 1333 Math for Measurement, or MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics. If their degree plan requires MATH 1314 College Algebra or MATH 1324 Math for Business and Economics, then they should enroll in MATD 0390 Intermediate Algebra.
  2. Students who did not complete high school Algebra II are not eligible to enroll in any college-level math courses until they pass the TASP or pass MATD 0390 Intermediate Algebra. Such students may choose to take MATD 0162 TASP Math Preparation or MATD 0390 Intermediate Algebra and should plan on taking the TASP as soon as they feel prepared.

Students that make a D, F, or IP should retake MATD 0370 Elementary Algebra.

Advising Students in MATD 0390 Intermediate Algebra

All students who have not yet passed TASP should be encouraged to retake it after working with the Official TASP Study Guide. The state requires that a student who has not passed the TASP take it again after completing remediation. Below are two options for their enrollment the following semester.

  1. Students who make an A, B, or C may enroll in MATH 1314 College Algebra and MATH 1324 Math for Business and Economics. They may also enroll in MATH 1332 Topics in Mathematics, MATH 1333 Math for Measurement, or MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics.
  2. Excellent students may enroll in MATH 1316 Trigonometry, where they will be expected to demonstrate complete mastery of Intermediate Algebra topics at the beginning of the class.

Students that make a D, F, or IP should retake MATD 0390 Intermediate Algebra.
