ACC
Mathematics Placement
Students entering the ACC math program:
Most students must take an assessment test in
mathematics, including some students who are not mandated to satisfy the
TSI. (ACC’s assessment test: COMPASS or ASSET)
|
A student who needs to take a developmental
math course must take an assessment test for placement. |

An
entering student must make COMPASS Algebra 69+ and
have
the course prerequisite to
enroll in any other college-level MATH course. |
The following entering students are not
required to take an assessment test in mathematics.
Note that students exempt from TSI requirements for
other reasons and who wish to take mathematics courses are required to
take a math assessment test.
Students continuing in the
ACC math program:
After initial placement,
students must follow the sequence of courses indicated by ACC’s course
prerequisites rather than using their high school courses as prerequisites,
except as indicated below.

Math Placement Chart for students entering the ACC
math program
COMPASS, CPT/ACCUPLACER, and ASSET
Approved by the Assessment and Advising Committee in
December 2003
Entering students may enroll
in the courses listed below based on the indicated assessment scores alone,
without checking course prerequisites.
Students who are slightly
below the listed cut-off scores for levels 6 and 7 may be placed into courses
at that level according to the guidelines on the “Decision Zones”
document.
For all MATH courses except those listed below, an entering student must have a COMPASS score of 69 or above (or equivalent) AS WELL AS the course prerequisite.

** These tests cover general mathematical skill, not specific
algebra skills. Students with good general knowledge may exceed these cut-off
scores and still need substantial review work on algebra skills to succeed in
algebra courses. Students with good algebra skills may not score as high as
some of these cut-off scores but still be ready for algebra courses. For more accurate assessment of current
algebra skills, we recommend the COMPASS.

DECISION ZONES:
Math Placement for entering students based
on other factors in addition to Assessment Scores
Barely
“passed THEA”:
|
COMPASS |
CPT |
ASSET |
|
Alg 39-44 |
El Alg 63-69 |
Int Alg 38-44 |
Eligible for
MATH 1332, 1333, or 1342.
Need MATH 1324 or MATH 1314 or other math course (thus
needs Intermediate Algebra, MATD 0390, to prepare):
* If the
student has passed a full semester of high school Elementary Analysis,
Precalculus, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, or equivalent courses, then
enroll in Intermediate Algebra, MATD 0390.
* Otherwise
he/she should enroll in Elementary Algebra, MATD 0370, to prepare for
Intermediate Algebra, MATD 0390.
Just
below “College Algebra” score on THEA or TSI state-approved test:
|
COMPASS |
CPT |
ASSET |
|
Alg 59-68 |
El Alg 80-89 or Coll Math 35-39 |
Int Alg 39-42 |
Eligible for
MATH 1332, 1333, or 1342.
Need MATH 1324 or MATH 1314 or other math course:
* If the
student has passed a full semester of high school Elementary Analysis,
Precalculus, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, or equivalent courses, then the
cut-off for starting in MATH 1324 or 1314 is the lowest score in this range
(COMPASS 59+, CPT 80+ or 35+, ASSET 39+.)
* If the
student has passed Algebra II, the cut-off score for enrolling in 1324 or 1314
is in the top half of this range, depending upon a number of factors.
If the student answers "Yes" to at least four of these questions,
then the cut-off score is middle of this range (COMPASS 63+, CPT 84+ or 37+,
ASSET 40+.)
If the student only answers "Yes" to two or three of these questions,
they may be placed in 1324 or 1314 if they are in approximately the top ¾ of
this range (COMPASS 66+, CPT 87+ or 38, ASSET 41.)
1. Do you have extra study time available this semester
in case you need more review than you thought? (More than the usual three hours
for every hour in class that is necessary for most math courses.) Your advisor
will review with you the number of hours per week you're working, how many
courses you're planning to take, and any other time commitments.
2. Did you complete Algebra II or Intermediate Algebra
within the last 18 months?
3. Did you make an A or B in Algebra II or Intermediate
Algebra?
4. Do you feel confident of your mathematical skills and
your test-taking skills?
5. Do you plan to enroll in an ACC mathematics lab to
accompany your course?
6. Do you have someone available to help you with your
questions about your math course several times each week?
7. Have you worked through the problems on the Prerequisite
Review Sheet for this course?
* If the
student hasn’t passed high school Algebra II then he/she should enroll in
Intermediate Algebra, MATD 0390, to satisfy the prerequisite for MATH 1324 or
MATH 1314.
