Flow charts of Austin Community College Mathematics Courses

Each sequence in this chart begins with developmental courses, which do not earn credit toward any degree or certificate.

Just as the sequence in each chart indicates the course prerequisite, the colors indicate the required assessment score to begin the sequence at that course.  We also provide a list of courses with their prerequisites

Purple: Developmental course
THEA: below 230 or
COMPASS: below 39

Yellow: College-level course
 "TSI - college-ready"
THEA 230+ or COMPASS 39+

Blue:  Developmental course
For students preparing for algebra-intensive college courses

Orange: College-level course
“College Algebra level”
THEA 270+ or COMPASS 69+

Green: College-level course
Must have course prerequisite
in addition to “College Algebra level”
THEA 270+ or COMPASS 69+

Because not all of the college-level courses count in every degree, several sequences are shown. For more information about what counts in each degree, consult the ACC catalog or the catalog of the school to which you intend to transfer.

Most students do not start at the beginning of a sequence because they remember some of the mathematics from their high school courses and demonstrate that on the ACC Assessment Test or the equivalent. Once you start a sequence, you may not skip courses in the sequence based on re-testing unless you are advised to do so by a full-time mathematics instructor acting as a mathematics advisor.

Sequence for mathematics, science, or engineering majors

Many students overestimate their prior preparation and current ability level. Current knowledge of prerequisite material is required in all courses in this sequence. Consult a faculty member in mathematics to verify placement. Caution is urged.

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra

MATH 1314, College Algebra *

MATH 1316, Trigonometry **

MATH 2412, Precalculus

MATH 2413, Calculus I

MATH 2414, Calculus II

MATH 2415, Calculus III

MATH 2420 Differential Equations ***

MTH 2254, Calculus IV
(Vector Calculus)

MATH 2318, Linear Algebra ****

* The prerequisite for College Algebra is a COMPASS score of 69 (or possibly a somewhat lower COMPASS score depending on high school courses) or MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra.

** The prerequisite for MATH 1316, Trigonometry, is one of the following

*** The prerequisite for MTH 2164, Differential Equations, is MATH 2414, Calculus II.

Sequence for business majors

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra

MATH 1314, College Algebra *

MATH 1324, Math for Bus and Eco *

MATH 1425, Business Calculus I **

MATH 1476, Business Calculus II

* The prerequisite for either College Algebra or Math for Business and Economics is a COMPASS score of 69 (or possibly a somewhat lower COMPASS score depending on high school courses) or ACC's MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra.

** This is NOT an adequate sequence for an economics major at UT Austin. Economics majors at UT Austin must take the regular calculus course: MATH 2413, 2414, and 2415.

Sequence for education majors

Students who plan to teach in secondary school should major in the field in which they wish to teach.
Students who plan to teach below the secondary school level should be aware that there are different requirements for K-4 teachers and 4-8 teachers. Those seeking grades 4-8 certification will usually choose a subject field for specialization. The description below is most appropriate for K-4 teachers and 4-8 teachers whose subject field is not math. Those who want middle school math certification will need to take considerably more mathematics courses, including some calculus. Such students should check the requirements of the four-year school before starting a math sequence.

MATD 0330, Basic Math Skills

MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra

MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra

A college-level math course "equivalent to College Algebra" that is accepted for this major at the four-year school to which you plan to transfer.*

MATH 1350 Mathematics for Teacher Certification I

MATH 1351 Mathematics for Teacher Certification II

* As prerequisite for their M316K/316L, UT Austin accepts M 302 (ACC MATH 1332 Topics in Math), M303D (ACC MATH 1324 Math for Bus and Eco), M316 (ACC MATH 1342 Elementary Statistics), or M305G (ACC MATH 2412 Precalculus). Notice that UT Austin DOES NOT accept College Algebra.
See http://www.utexas.edu/student/registrar/catalogs/ug00-02/ch09/courses/ch0908m.html#mathematics

* SWTSU's degree plans ( indicate that they require 1315 (ACC MATH 1314 College Algebra) or 1319 (ACC MATH 1324 Math for Bus and Eco) for most of the degrees for elementary and middle school teachers, except for middle school math certification they require 2417 (ACC MATH 2412 Precalculus). This course must be taken before 2311 (ACC MATH 1350.) See this page for equivalencies.
