Re: Retesting on the mathematics portion of the ACC Assessment
Test
In our discussions about cut-off scores last fall, Dr. Friedman
told us that he considers all the scores that have been set for
initial assessment and suggested that we consider, as a separate
question, how to deal with students who have already begun courses.
Our recommendation is that students who have already begun mathematics
courses should be advised by mathematics faculty members. The
student's instructor has considerably more information about the
student's background, skills, and abilities than an advisor will
have at that point, and so is better able to advise the student.
If the student's backgound and/or current performance in the course
indicates that he/she might be able to succeed in a higher course,
then a mathematics faculty member who is doing advising can decide
how the student can demonstrate his/her skills.
We ask that you help us in communicating this to the students.
