Schedule Notes for MATH 1342

DON'T SPEND more money than necessary for your required materials. Read this entire page carefully before you buy anything. Here is a short version of your choices.

In many programs, MATH 1342 is a good alternative course to MATH 1314, College Algebra. Check the requirements of your program at ACC and at the school to which you wish to transfer. More information about MATH 1342 is available.

Important note about refunds (or lack of them!):
If you buy the StatsPortal software directly from the publisher online, they do have a refund policy for a short period of time as long as you haven't opened too much of the e-book. Read details on their website. (See the link at the bottom of the StatsPortal page and be sure to choose the button to check your eligibility for a refund to see the information there.)
If you buy software from the bookstore, it is not possible to return it once it is opened. If you buy a new text from the bookstore, which is shrink-wrapped with the StatsPortal card inside, it is not possible to return it once it is opened.

Important note about re-using software for another semester:
It is possible to use the purhased software yourself in a subsequent semester if you didn't finish the course the first semester.
As I understand it, your access to StatsPortal is good for a year. However, this is non-transferable - you may not change the email address on your software after you register. So you can't give or sell it to someone else to use. Please note that this means you must use a permanent email address when you register.
If you buy the package with the MINITAB CD, that is yours forever. If you rent MINITAB, that is only yours for the term of the rental.

About textbooks:

Textbook

hard copy

or

electronic version

New: Both the hard copy and e-book are part of either the package listed above or the package for the classroom course.

Used: paper-back copy: approximately $50 used at the official ACC bookstore and about $80 used at Bevo's bookstore. (Does not include any electronic supplements)

electronic version: Included in the StatsPortal access

electronic version alone: The publisher also sells the electronic version of the book alone, without StatsPortal and all the supplements. Please do not buy this. You need the supplements for this course.

For StatsPortal, the access you purchase is for one user for 180 days.  If you don’t finish the course in one semester, you will be able to extend your subscription for that one user an additional 180 days without additional payment (or with a very small handling charge) if you follow their directions.   Students who began their access to StatsPortal the previous semester and were not able to finish the course should follow these directions to re-enroll in StatsPortal in their new instructor's course.

 StatsPortal includes:

·         Complete (electronic) text of the book  (Not very suitable for printing.  Can only be printed one page at a time.) Basically, if you use only the e-book, you'll need to be online at all times when you are studying for this course or working on homework.

·         Links from problems to allow you to just click a link to open the datafile for that problem in a statistics software package.

·         Links to more full answers to the odd-numbered problems than the back of the printed text.

·         Links to the online tutoring and to the applets and simulations used to illustrate the materials.

Access to the electronic technology manuals, including the MINITAB Manual.  (There is no Crunch-It Manual.)

·         Access to applets and simulations to explore some statistical ideas.  (These applets are mentioned in the text.)

·         Access to Crunch-It, web-based statistical software that is similar to MINITAB and can be used to work on problems when you don’t have MINITAB easily available.

·         Access to the online tutorials.

·         Access to the electronic version of the Student Study Guide.

·         Access to self-quizzes
