MATH 1332
Students who have completed high school Algebra II (with a C or better) at some time in the past have met the prerequisite for these courses and, in our experience, will be able to handle these courses from the perspective of the prerequisite mathematics skills. (It is assumed that the student also passed high school Geometry before being allowed to take Algebra II, and those skills learned in geometry are also used in these college-level courses.)
Students who pass the THEA (Texas Academic Skills Program) test have demonstrated knowledge of the prerequisite mathematics necessary for these courses, independently of their previous coursework. For more information, including a practice test and a registration bulletin with a summary of the skills, see http://www.thea.nesinc.com/. Students who wish to review more problems than these are encouraged to purchase The Official TASP Study Guide, available from most local bookstores for under $20. It includes review material for all of reading, writing, and mathematics, and a practice test.
Being exempt from TSI requirements is not the same as having passed the THEA and does not meet the prerequisite for these courses.
Students who have not done either of the above may meet the prerequisite by making an appropriate score the ACC Assessment Test (39 on the TCOMPASS Algebra Test). Often students can learn enough algebra in MATD 0370, Topics in Developmental Math, or MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra, to make that high a score on the TCOMPASS test. However, if a student is actually preparing to take either of these courses, it is better to prepare for the THEA test than the TCOMPASS test, because the algebra emphasized on the TCOMPASS is not as important as the geometry, logic, and other math skills, which are more emphasized on the THEA. MATD 0360 is the course designed to teach those skills.
Making what the state calls an equivalent score on one of the high-school tests does not meet the prerequisite for these courses. Those tests cover a different mixture of mathematical skills. Such scores on those other tests indicate a minimal level of mathematical skill, but do not necessarily indicate mastery of the type of material necessary to succeed in MATH 1332 and 1342. If you have not met the prerequisite for these courses, but you have a score on another test that you would like to have a mathematics faculty member evaluate, please contact a full-time mathematics professor. That professor will ask you questions to enable them to determine whether you have the skills tested on the THEA test.
In order to finish mandatory remediation by taking courses only, rather than taking a test, a student must complete MATD 0390, Intermediate Algebra (after MATD 0370, Elementary Algebra.) Passing Intermediate Algebra with a C or better is considered equivalent to passing high school Algebra II, so that meets the prerequisite for this course. Intermediate Algebra focuses more on algebra and less on the other general math skills than is ideal to prepare for MATH 1332 and 1342, but it is an acceptable way to meet the prerequisite.
