With a crowd of about 200 people watching, six men and women – all dressed in black – began snapping their fingers and singing a capella. Their vocals were flawless on the Latin-jazz piece, and when the backup band kicked in, the room felt as if it had turned into a nightclub. (more…)

Dance the summer away. The Dance Department presents its annual Summer Informance on Wednesday, July 2. This year’s line-up includes a variety of work from faculty, former students, and current students. Special guest Lauren Tietz, who has been performing in Austin since 2001, will lead a demonstration of contact improvisation, one of the best-known and most characteristic forms of postmodern dance. Don’t miss this eclectic, free show. It will be at 7 p.m. in Room 130 of the Rio Grande Campus. For more information call 294.7712.
For the health of it. The Health Professionals Institute is hosting a Healthcare Training Success Conference at the Radisson North Hotel June 25-27. Continuing education faculty and staff from community colleges across Texas and the United States will attend. Keynote speakers for the conference are Col. Patricia Hastings, director of U.S. Army Emergency Medical Services; Dr. Thomas Ditzler, director of research for the Department of Psychiatry at Tripler Army Medical Center; and Yvonne Van Dyke, vice president of nursing education and professional development for the Seton Family of Hospitals.
Girls focus on leadership. The ACC Summer Youth Leadership Institute, in collaboration with the African American Women & Girls Coalition, will be 8:30 a.m. to noon July 14-18 at the Eastview Campus. This five-day institute is open to girls in sixth through 12th grade. It will focus on excellence in education, strengthening self-esteem and character, and creating leadership opportunities to impact change. ACC is also partnering with the Girl Scouts for this institute. Individuals interested in attending can register online. For more information, contact Dr. Sharon Frederick or Loretta Edelen.

Women’s Conference. The fourth annual Women’s Health, Motivation and Empowerment Conference will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 19, at the Eastview Campus. The conference is geared toward women and girls of all ages. It focuses on six categories to encourage women to enhance their personal and professional development: education, health, career development, inspiration/motivation, relationships, and teen issues. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Avis Rupert of North Lake Community College in Irving. The free event includes breakfast and lunch and free daycare will be available. The Mobile Go Center will also be there for college planning. Go online to download the registration form and select workshops. Registrations must be submitted by July 16.
Top that! The Hospitality Management, Travel and Tourism, and Meeting and Event Planning Program was awarded the 2008 International Special Event Society CulinART Best Table Top Award this spring. CulinART was held at the University of Texas Alumni Center and highlighted local chefs, event planners, florists, and artists from premier businesses. Designers created elaborate centerpieces to capture the essence of fantasy and involve the senses. Proceeds from the event benefited the Wright House Wellness Center. ACC donated its winning piece to a silent auction held that evening.
Park it here. Construction on the new parking garage at the Rio Grande Campus will begin soon. The parking garage will be located at the northeast corner of Shoal Creek Boulevard and West 12th Street, the current location of the ACC Skill Center. ACC is in the process of relocating the center’s operations, and the building is scheduled for demolition on or about July 21. The new garage will consist of six levels, with 452 parking spaces. The first level will also contain the ACC Bookstore. The garage is expected to be completed for the fall 2009 semester.
