ACC hosts a birthday celebration 35 years in the making
Saturday, March 28 | 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Eastview Campus
What do you get when you mix the best of ACC with a little East Austin flavor and a live music festival? You get All Access ACC, an education celebration and birthday bash. This year All Access joins Hip Hop into College for ACC’s biggest open house in 35 years on Saturday, March 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Road. Admission is free! Austin man attends ACC, then and now

The Austin Community College District joined government, industry, and workforce development leaders at the Riverside Campus Wednesday, March 4, to dedicate a solar energy system that will increase access to renewable energy job training. (more…)
ACC homepage gets a face lift. Public Information and College Marketing in conjunction with the ACC Web Committee has made homepage improvements that highlight the college’s growth as an institution and serve all users in the best possible manner. Simplicity is the watchword, with access to the most frequently used services and websites a major focus. Please visit the Web Development Area to preview the new features and provide feedback using the comment form.
Le’ Bistrette is ready to serve. The Culinary Arts Program has lit the stove and is ready to take your order. Its American Regional Cuisine Restaurant is serving lunch this semester at the Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Road. The restaurant opens 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday between March 25 and May 6 in Building 3000. Students serve as chefs, waitstaff, and maitres d’ under the watchful eye of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management program faculty. The public, along with students and ACC employees, are invited to dine at Le’Bistrette. Reservations are required at least 24 hours in advance. ACC hosts Green Economy Forum. An expanding green economy puts Central Texas in great position to benefit from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. However, it requires a regional strategy. ACC is bringing together Central Texas legislative, business, and education leaders 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 30, at the Eastview Campus, 3401 Webberville Road, to begin developing a regional strategy. The forum will include a review of current initiatives, discussion of available potential resources, and formation of a regional coalition. For more information call (512) 223.7070.
Let the creativity flow at Carnival ah! The Arts and Humanities Division presents Carnival ah!, a three-day festival celebrating the arts and ACC’s commitment to fueling Austin’s creative culture. The
festival will be April 2-4 at the Rio Grande Campus, 1212 Rio Grande St. The event features a stellar lineup of literary readings, film presentations, panel discussions, theatrical works, music performances, and art displays and sales. Also participating will be community arts groups including the Austin Museum of Art, Austin Lyric Opera, VSA Arts, Badgerdog, Austin Bat Cave, A-TRAC, and the Girls’ School of Austin. Students and faculty, along with the public, are invited to share their talents with ACC in a carnival-esque atmosphere. For more information visit the Carnival ah! website.
Accent bloggers report on SXSW. Five Accent student reporters might be the luckiest bunch heading into spring break. They have obtained media passes to the
coveted SXSW weeklong conference and festival. David Rodriguez, Lindsay Preston, Sarah Vasquez, Matt Thompson, and Shawn Hinojosa will blog throughout the festival, covering the films, music, and conferences that make up one of Austin’s premier events. In December Texas Comptroller Susan Combs issued a report “Texas Works” that calls for increased efforts to promote the associate degree. | See report
Silver Addy in packaging for her work, “Martine’s Baked Goods,” while Robbins earned a Bronze Addy in promotion/point of purchase for his “Drunken Sailor Ale.” Teague-Strotkamp and Robbins produced their projects in fall 2008 as part of their Design Communication II class with Adjunct Assistant Professor Meagan McKeeman. The Addys were presented February 19.

Editor’s note: Long before Austin Community College was established, some Austin residents were making the case for a two-year college to specifically address the needs of local workers and businesses. The American-Statesman featured the issue in a full-page story July 30, 1961, on the proposed Travis County Junior College. Coincidentally, reporter Anita Brewer would go on to become ACC’s first public information officer and later join the Journalism faculty.

Winter Break Hours for Students. Austin Community College offices will close for winter break at 5 p.m. Monday, December 22, through Sunday, January 4. However, there are reduced services 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. December 29-30 at the Rio Grande Campus so students can complete the admission process or register for classes.
The Scoop on Round Rock. The community is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony for the Round Rock Campus at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, February 5. The event marks the official start for the race to open doors to ACC’s newest and biggest campus. Pending cooperative weather, the project is on schedule to open in 2010 as planned. Parking Garage Moves to New Level. Revised plans for the Rio Grande Campus parking garage call for a seventh floor to accommodate 90 additional vehicles. But you don’t have to take our word for it. eMarketing Part I: How to Properly Use eTools. ACC Customized Training is hosting a series of one-day conferences January 28-29 to help businesses and educational institutions effectively use the hottest eMarketing tools to meet their goals, whether building profits or enrollment. Separate days are tailored to business and educators, so visit the conference website to find the right conference for you.
“eMarketing can benefit almost any organization,” says Katrina Gadison, Customized Training account executive. “It is cost efficient, time effective, and has a measurable return on investment. Cost is $199 per person for individuals registering by January 7 and $249 for those registering January 8-20.
eMarketing Part II: eTools for ACC Employees. Customized Training is also hosting a special half-day conference January 30 for ACC employees. Participants will explore new Internet tools to assist with recruitment and outreach and learn specific steps on how to use them.
Cost is $99 per person; however, eligible employees can use a tuition voucher in lieu of payment. The deadline to register is January 23, 2009. Click here to download a flier or visit the Customized Training website for more information.
AutoCAD Degree Builds to a Bachelor’s. A new agreement allows AutoCAD students to earn their bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce. Austin Community College and A&M-Commerce have approved a transfer agreement that lets students complete most of their coursework at ACC, then transfer to A&M-Commerce and finish their final 36 credits online.

Spring Events, from Ah! to Z. The Arts and Humanities Division has a full slate of entertaining performances, festivals, and lectures planned for spring. The highlight of the semester is Carnival Ah!, which will showcase the thinking, craftsmanship, and creativity of all areas in the division, from Creative Writing, to Foreign languages, to Art, Drama, and Dance.
