A.C.C.'s Student Government Association Wins Election for TJCSGA President
AUSTIN - Members of Austin Community College's Student Government Association (SGA) returned from Corpus Christi, TX, this week after successfully winning the election for State President School of the Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA). The TJCSGA is an umbrella organization for the 50 community and junior colleges in Texas.
"As State President School, ACC's SGA will preside over next year's conference to be held in Austin, and will work to strengthen communication between each school within the organization," said Hector Tristan, Jr., president of ACC's Student Government Association. "We have also committed ourselves to advocating for higher education issues in state and national politics, reforming the TASP test, and petitioning the government for more funding towards Pell Grants."
El Paso Community College was ACC's only opponent during the conference, and ACC members campaigned by attending candidates' forums, campaign rallies and conference activities throughout the conference. "It is an honor for me to be able to work with a group of such dedicated students from ACC," said Tristan. "Everyone worked tirelessly to campaign for this victory." Tristan said that members spent the weeks leading up to the conference creating campaign materials to hand out at the conference.
Nirav Bhakta, SGA Historian for ACC and a member of the International Students Association, said that the election was won by a landslide. "We were shocked to hear that El Paso received a little over 40 votes, compared to ACC's 173 votes. El Paso campaigned just as hard as we did, but we won the votes of more schools."
The one-year term will bring added recognition to ACC's SGA, which has never held a state office before this election. "It's definitely a learning experience for us to meet and work with other SGA's," said Linda Kathryn Stone, SGA Parliamentarian.
"ACC is a great school and I know we will do a fantastic job next year representing not only our school, but our wonderful city," said Steve Cortez, SGA At-Large Representative and President of the Hispanic Student Association.
