BMC Software Supports Austin Community College's Efforts
for Globalization Curriculum
Industry Leader is First Software Company to Help College Provide Non-English Software for International Software Development Training
Houston-- BMC Software Inc., [Nasdaq: BMCS] today announced it has donated funds to Austin Community College (ACC) to help ACC build a globalization curriculum that will train students to develop software for international markets. The globalization curriculum, the first of its kind in Austin, will roll out in the fall of 2000. The curriculum is designed to train students to develop non-English software, and BMC Software is the first area employer to provide support for the program.
BMC Software donated funds to purchase software licenses for Chinese and Japanese versions of Microsoft Windows NT to help ACC build the curriculum, which is planned under ACC's ACAP (Austin Competency Analysis Profile) initiative. Under the ACAP program, representatives from business, industry, labor and community agencies throughout the Austin area work with ACC to develop core competencies across specific occupations. Targeted careers include project management, software development, software quality assurance and technical writing. ACC's globalization curriculum will train students to develop software that can operate and be used worldwide.
"BMC Software recognizes the importance of a global software development training program and supports Austin Community College in its efforts to develop this much-needed curriculum," said Betty Otter-Nickerson, vice president of operations for product management and development and Austin site manager for BMC Software. "As a large Austin employer, we want ACC to know that we support them in taking a global stance on training tomorrow's workforce."
With the increasingly global economy, internationalization of software - or producing non-English software that can be operated and used worldwide - has become an increasingly important issue for technology employers. For example, some countries develop software systems that read up and down, as opposed to English software, which reads left to right. ACC's ACAP program and globalization initiative makes it the first educational institution in Austin and one of the first in the nation to address the globalization issue. While ACC is working with a range of area technology companies to develop the new curriculum, BMC Software is the first company to make a donation.
"We are pleased to receive this gift from one of Austin's major employers in the software
industry," said Elizabeth Bradshaw, chair of the ACC Foundation. "BMC Software is truly a partner focused on the future success of students."
"As we launch this globalization initiative, which is so crucial to the education of our future workforce, Austin Community College lauds BMC Software for being the first of our area industry leaders to step up and provide support," said Dr. Richard Fonté, president of ACC. "Their donation will provide invaluable non-English software that will help in offering our curriculum."
