Women Discuss Equity Issues at Equity for Texans Conference Women's Legislative Days 2001
Austin, TX. --Austin Community College, SBC Communications, Inc./Southwestern Bell, Southern Union Gas, 3M and the Capital Times will host more than 500 participants from across the state March 4-6 at the Thompson Conference Center at UT-Austin for "The Equity for Texans" Women's Legislative Days 2001 Conference.
This year's conference participants will have an opportunity to attend more than 20 workshops, topics include: equity in the workplace, health care, higher/public education, reducing gun and family violence, child care, nursing home and elder care reform, policies impacting immigrant women, the criminal justice system, hate-crime and various legislative issues, just to name a few. This exciting conference is being held in conjunction with the Texas legislative session and Women's History Month.
"Today, this conference is considered the nation's largest non-partisan conference of its kind," said Beverly Silas, conference co-chair. "This conference is important because it addresses proposed bills that will have a direct impact on issues that affect women. I believe this is why this conference has garnered state and national attention."
The program will feature welcome remarks by Mayor Kirk Watson and keynote addresses by US Rep. Shelia Jackson Lee and Sarah Weddington.
Texas Women's Legislative Days has been held in conjunction with each Texas legislative session since 1985. The conference now has more than over 50 sponsors and participation from organizations including the League of Women Voters of Texas, the Texas Women's Political Caucus, and the Texas Council on Family Violence.
The fee for the conference is $65. For registration information please contact Jennifer Lopez at 223-7049.
