ACC Receives Major Gift from the Semiconductor Industry to Build a Simulated FAB

Austin, Texas-- Austin Community College Foundation has received $125,000 from the Austin Area Semiconductor Executive Council (AASEC) to construct a simulated fabrication facility (FAB) at its Riverside Campus and to promote awareness of ACC’s Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology (SMT) degree program.

“AASEC is a public-private partnership of the area’s semiconductor industry and K-16 education whose objective is to address the workforce needs of the semiconductor industry in this region,” said Gary Heerssen, chairman of the council and AMD group vice president, Wafer Fabrication Group. “This new simulated FAB will give students hands-on training in a clean-room environment where semiconductor manufacturing takes place. Such industry-specific job training can result in more immediate and clearly defined work opportunities.”

ACC’s SMT Program offers a one-year certificate and a two-year associate's degree. Graduates work as fabrication operators and technicians throughout the semiconductor industry, and can also transfer their ACC credits towards a four-year degree.

“ACC’s semiconductor program is one of the premier programs in the country and this training provides tremendous learning opportunities for ACC students,” said Mike Midgley, ACC’s dean for computer studies and advanced technology. “This partnership between ACC and the semiconductor industry is invaluable for both parties and greatly benefits students and the community as a whole.”

Destination Digital is a comprehensive workforce initiative sponsored by AASEC designed to increase public understanding of the high-tech industry. In addition to funding industry-specific training, the $1.5 million public-private partnership targets career awareness, work-based learning, and educator professional development. The AASEC also sponsors scholarships and internships for semiconductor manufacturing technology students who attend ACC.

Some of the current members of the AASEC are: Austin Community College, AMD, Applied Materials, Cypress Semiconductors, Kinetics Electronics, Motorola, Samsung, Sematech, SEMI, Tokyo Electron, Capital Area Training Foundation, Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, Austin Independent School District, Del Valle Independent School District, Manor Independent School District and Round Rock Independent School District.
