Intermediate Algebra MATD 0390

Online Mathematics with Dr. Nancy C. Miller

Getting Started

– Spring 2012 --

Some students are more successful in regular classroom courses than in distance learning courses. Please take this survey and think carefully about the questions and your answers. At ACC we all want you to succeed this semester. The first step is to enroll in a course that suits your learning style and for which you have current knowledge of the prerequisite material.

Before you begin any course work, do the following: Complete the Pre-Test Review.

Do the review without looking at the answers then check your answers when you are finished. If you can answer 43 of 61 questions correctly without help, you are probably ready to take Intermediate Algebra if you are TSI complete. Read all of the information on this web site.

Please do not purchase a textbook or MyMathLab online algebra software until you have read all of the material on this web site and do not remove the cellophane wrapping from your textbook or pay for the software until you are sure you want to take this course online and Nancy Miller has told you this is the appropriate algebra course based on the Intermediate Algebra course pretest, that must be taken in an ACC testing center as soon as possible; if you have not yet earned an A, B, or C in Elementary Algebra at ACC. The bookstore will not allow you to return the book or software if the cellophane wrapping has been removed.

When you do open your text or software, be sure to save the MyMathLab authorization code on the software access card. Without a proper authorization code, you will not be able to register for the MyMathLab course software or participate in the class. The MyMathlab software that includes the online text can be purchased online, but not returned.

After you have read the material on this web site, return to this web page and click on Orientation Form below, and send your response by e-mail, not attachment, to <nmiller@austincc.edu>

For students who are not progressing significantly in MyMathLab online software or do not know and understand all course policies, there will be in person orientation at PIN campus, Feb. 16, from 5-6pm in the 6th floor learning lab computer classroom.

Orientation Form.

You will be asked a few questions about the information you learned from this entire web site, and to provide Nancy Miller with contact information about you. If I don't have your orientation information by Feb. 17, you may be dropped from the course.

Information about MyMathLab algebra software required in this course.

MyMathLab is an interactive online software that sometimes accompanies the text when purchased. MyMathLab software is required for this course and can be purchased separately. You may have an unused MyMathLab access that you can use for this course if you had one in your MATD 0330 or MATD 0370 text at ACC, but didn't use it in that lecture course. The paper text is optional. The Multi-media text in the software includes the text and you can print pages to study or problems to do away from your computer.

Purchasing MyMathLab
All new textbooks for this course purchased at an ACC bookstore include MyMathLab access. MyMathLab software is not included with the purchase of most used books, and may not be included with a new book purchased at a different bookstore.

Here are some other ways to purchase MyMathLab:
" You may purchase a Student MyMathLab Access Kit (ISBN 0-321-59342-1) online from Pearson Higher Ed for about $80.00 at: www.mymathlab.com/buying.html.
" Student MyMathLab Access Kits are available at other retailers, such as amazon.com. Use caution, as the product is not guaranteed by Pearson when purchased anywhere other than an ACC bookstore or the Pearson website.
" A new textbook bundled with MyMathLab may also be purchased from another retailer. Make sure the product specifically indicates a bundle including MyMathLab software.

Included in MyMathLab software
" Online access to all pages of the textbook so the paper text is not required for this course
unless you want a paper text

" Personalized study guide based on performance on practice tests and quizzes for each section

" Online homework exercises tied to homework problems in the textbook

" Multimedia learning aids (videos & animations) for select examples and exercises in the textbook

" Quizzes linked to sections of the textbook
