PHYS 2425 – Engineering Physics I

Project on Video Analysis of 2-D Collisions

Project Description

The class will be divided into two teams.  The objective of each team is to analyze three different types of two-dimensional collisions using video analysis.  The teams can use any two-dimensional surface they wish but small air tables will be provided.  A Digital video camera will also be available for each team as well as computers with video capture and analysis capabilities.  A separate handout will be provided concerning details of the video acquisition and analysis.

Project Specifications

1.  Each team must pick a team leader.  It is the team leader’s primary responsibility to see to the completion of the project and to communicate with the instructor.

2.  Each team will subdivide into three subteams – one for each type of collision.

3.  The collisions must include a two-dimensional elastic collision, a two-dimensional inelastic collision, and a third collision of the teams choosing.

4.  The analysis of each collision should pay particular attention to momentum conservation as well as kinetic energy conservation

5.  Each team will submit one written report per team.  The report will be typed double-spaced and will include the following sections.  Each section should have the heading given below including Roman numeral.  a separate handout will be provided giving additional detail about the report.

 Abstract

I.  Introduction

II. Procedure

III.  Data

IV.  Analysis

V.  Conclusions

6.  Each team must submit its procedure for approval prior to performing data acquisition.

7.  Each team must meet all project deadlines.  Missed Deadlines will reduce the grade for the project.

8.  Each team member will receive the same grade with a maximum of 40 points possible.
