Scientific Notation

Post-Test

Grade yourself. If you get all of the problems correct, or only made small mistakes on one or two, congratulatios! You have mastered working with numbers in scientific notation. You can choose another section of the main menu if you like.

If you still miss some of these problems, you should take another look at the tutorial. You can always come back and take this test again.

  1. Write the following numbers in scientific notation:

    1. 654,000 = 6.54 X 105

    2. 0.000000251 = 2.51 X 10-7

    3. 7,530,000,000 = 7.53 X 109

    4. 100 = 1 X 102

    5. 0.0081 = 8.1 X 10-3

    6. 1 = 1 X 100

  2. Write the following in decimal form:

    1. 4 X 105 = 400,000

    2. 3.4 X 10-6 = 0.0000034

    3. 4.84 X 10-9 = 0.00000000484

    4. 7.12 X 1013 = 71,200,000,000,000

    5. 1 X 103 = 1000

  3. Multiply or divide the following:

    1. (6.1 X 105) X (1.7 X 103) = 1.037 X 109

    2. (7.82 X 1024) X (-3.79 X 10-15) = -2.96 X 1010

    3. (8.13 X 10-11) X (3.45 X 10-21) = 2.8 X 10-31

    4. (6.98 X 107) / (-4 X 1013) = -1.72 X 10-6

    5. (5.2 X 107) / (6.15 X 10-5) = 8.45 X 1011

    6. (-8.72 X 1015) / (-3.73 X 10-12) = 2.34 X 1027

  4. Add or subtract the following:

    1. (3.5 X 104) + (4.1 X 103) = 3.91 X 104

    2. (6.23 X 10-6) + (1.75 X 10-4) = 1.81 X 10-4

    3. (5.37 X 1010) + (6.79 X 1012) = 6.84 X 1012

    4. (8.45 X 108) - (3.94 X 106) = 8.41 X 108

    5. (7.22 X 10-6) - (8.21 X 10-7) = 6.4 X 10-6

    6. (9.43 X 106) - (2.78 X 108) = -2.69 X 108

  5. Solve the following:

    1. (8.77 X 104)2 = 7.69 X 109

    2. (3.46 X 10-3)3 = 4.14 X 10-8

    3. 1 / (4.305 X 105) = 2.32 X 10-6

    4. 1 / (8.19 X 10-8) = 1.22 X 107

    5. square root of 3.49 X 106 = 1.87 X 103

    6. square root of 7.53 X 109 = 8.68 X 105

    7. cube root of 2.56 X 1020 = 6.35 X 107
