ELECTRONIC MAILING LISTS

About Mailing Lists:

A mailing list is a forum where people with similar interests can share ideas and exchange information. When you join a list you receive topic-related messages in your Email inbox. You can send out your own opinions, ideas, and questions which will then be read (and responded to) by the entire group of list members. The Community Learning Network of the Ministry of Education of British Columbia offers a webpage which links to hints about how to find and use internet lists for educational purposes. You can read archives of several lists and find out how lists work. I really like a searchable database called Liszt: Searchable Directory of e-Mail Discussion Groups that I found at this site. A search of "mathematics" found 81 lists!

When you first sign on a list, you will receive instructions about how to leave the list. DON'T LOSE THIS INFORMATION! You may need it sooner than you expect. "Lurking" for awhile before you begin posting is a good idea too, and will help you to avoid any breaches of "list etiquette."
