Digital Imaging I (WECM-ARTC 1402; ARTC 1002):

Course Description: Digital imaging using raster image editing and/or image creation software: scanning, resolution, file formats, output devices, color systems, and image-acquisitions. A solid introduction to Adobe Photoshop with specific attention to practical applications to include preparing images for print (halftone theory) and web output. Gain proficiency with Adobe Photoshop panels, image editing, selections, layers, masks, and paths. Introduction to layer styles, type effects, and filters. Encourages creative studio skills.
Learning Outcomes:
Identify terminology, advantages and limitations of image editing software; distinguish bit-mapped resolutions for image acquisitions and output devices; use digital editing and painting tools; use basic half-tone theory in production of images, manipulate, create, and edit digital images for print and for web; specify appropriate file formats.

Required Text: Classroom in a Book, Adobe Photoshop CS5 for lab OR version of book that comparable to the software used by individual online students; Recommended Reference: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Quick Start Guide. Go to www.addall.com to search for least expensive copies of books. The course follows the CS 5 Classroom in a Book. There are comparable lessons in earlier versions of the text. Handouts and materials are updated for -5 versions Adobe Photoshop. There may be problems using earlier versions of the software.

Digital Imaging II (WECM-ARTC 2405; ARTC 1005):

Course Description: Principles of digital image processing and electronic painting. Emphasis on bitmapped- or raster-based image making and the creative aspects of electronic illustration for commercial and fine art applications. This includes intermediate techniques using Adobe Photoshop to gain greater proficiency using shortcuts and actions; masks and channels; the pen tool, vector shapes and smart objects; type effects; and use of layer styles, blending modes, filters and other special effects. Emphasis on non-destructive editing. Includes introduction to color management for output to print, spot color and duotones. Prerequisite: Digital Imaging I or comparable. Instructor approval. Learning Outcomes: Identify and explain the advanced concepts and concerns associated with image resolution and file size; demonstrate digital editing and use of printing/web tools; creating, editing, and painting digital images; color correction and manipulation of photographic images; saving and outputting images on various output devices.
